Specific entry requirements
A Pass grade for all semester 1 and 2 courses in the Study Programme in Dental Hygiene.
Objectives
Periodontology 3, 4 credits
After completing the course, students will be able to:
- Describe the epidemiology, aetiology and pathogenesis of periodontal diseases on the basis of science and proven experience.
- Describe the link between oral and general health, as well as how oral health can influence general well-being.
- Describe indications and the provision of periodontal treatments such as periodontal surgery, laser, antibiotic and implant treatments.
- Independently compile personalised prophylaxis programmes, as well as planning treatment measures in cases of periodontitis and/or peri-implantitis on the basis of scientific evidence.
- Reflect on various periodontal treatment methods and their importance on the basis of psychosocial, cultural, health economic and ethical aspects at individual, group and community level.
- Describe mucosal changes in the periodontium.
- Describe risk factors relating to periodontal disease on the basis of scientific evidence, and explain the link between general diseases and oral health, as well as the importance of oral health for general well-being.
Health communication 2, 3 credits
After completing the course, students will be able to:
- Describe empirically-based discussion methods for influencing behaviours with a view to promoting oral health and general well-being.
- Describe empirically-based theories relating to practical implementation of tobacco prevention and tobacco cessation, plus their importance for oral and general health from an individual and community perspective.
- Explain the importance of interprofessional learning with other related professions in the care sector, and identify the role of the dental hygienist.
- Describe how patients who are afraid of the dentist should be dealt with and treated.
Content
The course consists of two modules:
Periodontology 3, 4.0 hp
- Periodontal and implant surgery.
- Laser.
- Treatment with antibiotics.
- The relationship between the oral health and general well-being.
- Medical health conditions
- Risk factors for periodontal disease and the link to general diseases.
Health Communication 2, 3.0 hp
- Theories of counseling methods.
- Tobacco prevention and tobacco cessation.
- Interprofessional collaboration
- Dental anxiety.
Teaching methods
Periodontology 3, 4 credits
Lectures and seminars.
Health communication 2, 3 credits
Lectures, seminars and group work. This element includes interprofessional collaboration students studying other professions.
Seminars and group exercises are compulsory.
The course coordinator decides whether, and if so how, absence from compulsory course elements can be made up. Study results cannot be reported until the student has participated in compulsory course elements or compensated for any absence in accordance with instructions from the course coordinator. Absence from a compulsory course element could mean that the student can not retake the element until the next time the course is offered.
Examination
Periodontology 3, 4 credits
Written examination, written individual assignment and oral presentation in seminars.
Health communication 2, 3 credits
Written examination, written individual assignment, plus oral presentation in seminars.
Attendance of compulsory course elements is also required in order to pass the course.
To receive a grade of Pass with distinction for the whole course, a Pass with distinction is required for the Periodontology 3 and Health communication 2 modules.
Students who do not pass a regular examination are entitled to re-sit the examination on five more occasions. If the student has failed six examinations/tests, no additional examination is given. Each occasion the student participates in the same test counts as an examination. Submission of a blank exam paper is regarded as an examination. In case a student is registered for an examination but does not attend, this is not regarded as an examination.
If there are special grounds, or a need for adaptation for a student with a disability, the examiner may decide to deviate from the syllabus's regulations on the examination form, the number of examination opportunities, the possibility of supplementation or exemptions from the compulsory section/s of the course etc. Content and learning outcomes as well as the level of expected skills, knowledge and abilities may not be changed, removed or reduced.
Transitional provisions
If the course is discontinued or undergoes major changes, examination opportunities will be offered according to a previous list of references and intended learning outcomes for a maximum of one academic year after the implementation of the revision/discontinuation.

Language of instruction for the Periodontology 2 module: Swedish.
The Health communication 2 module is partly taught in English.
