Specific entry requirements

A Pass grade for all semester 1 and 2 courses in the Study Programme in Dental Hygiene.

Objectives

Basic pedagogics and psychology, 3 credits
After completing the course, students will be able to:

  • Describe and apply basic pedagogic principles when communicating about oral health.
  • Describe the term "developmental psychology" at both individual and group level.
  • Reflect on the importance of group psychology in teaching contexts on the basis of behavioural science research.
  • Work on the basis of ethical principles and the needs of the individual or group when teaching about oral health.
  • Reflect on the consequences of violence against women and violence in close relationships from a dental care perspective.

Education from a multicultural perspective, 1.5 credits
After completing the course, students will be able to:

  • Plan, shape and implement teaching initiatives on oral health and compile teaching material on oral health for different social groups on the basis of ethical aspects.
  • Reflect on the multicultural perspective and equal opportunities with regard to human rights in the field of dental care.

Content

This course comprises two modules:

Basic Pedagogics and Psychology, 3.0 hp

Grading scale: VU
  • Basic pedagogic principles and research..
  • Developmental psychology.
  • Group psychology.
  • Ethical principles and a professional approach.
  • Consequences of violence in close relations.

Education from a Multicultural Perspective, 1.5 hp

Grading scale: GU
  • Teaching of oral health at group and community level.
  • The multicultural perspective and human rights.

Teaching methods

Lectures, seminars and group work.

Seminars and group work are compulsory.

The course coordinator decides whether, and if so how, absence from compulsory course elements can be made up. Study results cannot be reported until the student has participated in compulsory course elements or compensated for any absence in accordance with instructions from the course coordinator. Absence from a compulsory course element could mean that the student can not retake the element until the next time the course is offered.

Examination

Basic pedagogics and psychology, 3 credits
Written individual assignment.

Education from a multicultural perspective, 1.5 credits
Oral presentation in seminars, plus written individual assignment.

Attendance of compulsory course elements is also required in order to pass the course.

Late submission of the written assignment means that the student cannot get the grade Pass with distinction. A failed written assignment may be supplemented to obtain a pass grade.

To receive a grade of Pass with distinction for the whole course, a Pass with distinction is required for the Basic pedagogics and psychology module, as well as at least a Pass in the Education from a multicultural perspective module.

Students who do not pass a regular examination are entitled to re-sit the examination on five more occasions. If the student has failed six examinations/tests, no additional examination is given. Each occasion the student participates in the same test counts as an examination. Submission of a blank exam paper is regarded as an examination. In case a student is registered for an examination but does not attend, this is not regarded as an examination.

If there are special grounds, or a need for adaptation for a student with a disability, the examiner may decide to deviate from the syllabus's regulations on the examination form, the number of examination opportunities, the possibility of supplementation or exemptions from the compulsory section/s of the course etc. Content and learning outcomes as well as the level of expected skills, knowledge and abilities may not be changed, removed or reduced.

Transitional provisions

If the course is discontinued or undergoes major changes, examination with the previous literature list and learning outcomes will be offered for no more than one academic year after the implementation of the revision/discontinuation.

Language of instruction for the Basic pedagogics and psychology module: Swedish.
Language of instruction for the Education from a multicultural perspective module: English. The examinations will given in English.
