Objectives

The main aims of the course are that the student at the advanced level achieves advanced knowledge regarding specific nursing, and from ethical and multicultural aspects independently is able to take a position to and develop a professional attitude within emergency care. Further, the student should achieve advanced medical knowledge in pathophysiology and pharmacology to be able to understand and participate in the care of the acutely ill the patient. Part 1 Emergency care nursing, Emergency care nursing, 3 credits On completion of the course, the student should be able to: Suggest and explain applicable specific nursing of the acutely and critically ill patient by integrating knowledge in pathophysiology, pharmacology. Be able to identify and explain specific nursing based on the acutely and critically ill patient's individual needs on the basis of an ethical, social and multicultural perspective Part 2 Pathophysiology in emergency care, Pathophysiology in emergency care, 3 credits On completion of the course, the student should be able to: Explain causes (aetiology), development (pathogenesis) and pathophysiology in acute neurological diseases in relation to the symptoms. Account for diagnostics, treatment and prevention within emergency care. Explain causes (aetiology), development (pathogenesis) and pathophysiology in acute respiratory diseases in relation to the symptoms. Account for diagnostics, treatment and prevention within emergency care. Explain causes (aetiology), development (pathogenesis) and pathophysiology in acute circulatory diseases in relation to the symptoms. Account for diagnostics, treatment and prevention within emergency care. Explain causes (aetiology), development (pathogenesis) and pathophysiology in acute nephrological/urological diseases in relation to the symptoms. Account for diagnostics, treatment and prevention within emergency care. Explain causes (aetiology), development (pathogenesis) and pathophysiology in acute endocrine diseases in relation to the symptoms. Account for diagnostics, treatment and prevention within emergency care. Part 3 Pharmacology, Pharmacology, 1.5 credits On completion of the course, the student should be able to: Explain effect and side-effect mechanisms of drugs in emergency care for the nervous system, the circulatory system, the respiratory system, the endocrinological system and for anti-infection drugs. Relate urgent conditions to indications for drug treatment with drugs as above.

Part 1 Emergency care nursing, Emergency care nursing In this part, knowledge is acquired to identify and explain specific nursing of the acutely and critically ill patient with circulatory, respiratory, cerebral, and renal dysfunctions. 3 credits Part 2 Pathophysiology in emergency care, Pathophysiology in emergency care In this part, the pathophysiological mechanisms underlying the emergence of acute diseases are studied. 3 credits Part 3 Pharmacology, Pharmacology In this part, the drugs in focus in acute conditions regarding indications for treatment are studied, effect and side-effect mechanisms. 1.5 credits

Teaching methods

Working forms The course is both campus and web-based (distance) The working method aims to train a scientific approach through active knowledge acquisition, problem-solving, critical analysis and reflection, and training the ability of oral and written presentation. Therefore, the following parts are used in this course. Scheduled course introduction, tutorial groups, seminars and group discussions. Student-activating methods are consistently used including work in tutorial groups. The distance education is IT based and based on individual and collaborative work. Different working methods such as individual study assignments, work in groups, virtual discussions and seminars and lectures are used. The number of physical hits is limited to at most 2 days/7.5 credits. Compulsory participation Compulsory parts: Scheduled group meetings Scheduled information in a large group Seminars

Examination

Examination All course parts are examined with a written individual examination. For a Pass grade, all subparts should be graded with a Pass, at least. For a Pass with distinction, all subparts should be graded with the grade Pass with distinction. In case of absence from compulsory parts, the student is referred to the course coordinator for a discussion of consequences. Limited number of examinations or practical training sessions A student without an approved result after three examinations can be offered to take the course once more. However, there are at most six examination opportunities for each course. Examination times are announced at the beginning of the course.
