Nursing and medical sciences in ambulance care 1, 15 credits

Professional qualification as a nurse certified by the National Board of Health and Welfare. Nurse degree of 180 HE credits or Bachelor's degree in nursing about at least 180 HE credits. English and Swedish language skills equivalent to English A and Swedish B at Swedish upper secondary school are also required.

The general aims of the course are that based on the central concepts of the nursing; man, nursing act/relation, health and environment, be able to carry out a person-oriented care within ambulance care. The student should develop knowledge and skills independently to be able to apply and integrate nursing with medical care and treatment in ambulance care.

Learning outcomes:

Part 1: Specific pharmacology 1.5 HE credits
On completion of the course, the student should:
- be able to explain effect - and side-effect mechanisms for drug current within ambulance care.
- be able to explain and analyse indications and contraindications for drug treatment at acute conditions within ambulance care.

Part 2: Nursing within ambulance care 6 HE credits
On completion of the course, the student should:
- be able to assess nursing need in a patient with the influence of vital functions and explain the relationship between nursing need and nursing acts, medical care and treatment within ambulance care.
- be able to identify and assess nursing need in a patient with acute mental disease.
- based on current research be able to analyse and argue around commonly occurring nursing needs and nursing acts within ambulance care.
- explain external and internal factors influence on the well-being of the patient and the family within the ambulance care from ethical principles and the central concepts of the nursing.
- be able to analyse and explain risks and complications that can arise related to the patient's conditions and the specific environment.

Part 3: Placement 7.5 HE credits
The student should after completed placement within ambulance care (3hp):
- independently be able to assess the patient's vital functions and nursing needs.
- under supervision with an ethical and socio-cultural perspective be able to apply a personcenterad nursing.
- be able to apply relevant principles of a patient safe care concerning positioning, locomotion technique, hygiene and medical technology.
- independently be able to, orally and in written form, communicate information in the patient's nursing chain.
- be able to in a professional way counter patients and close and reflect on the own pre-understanding in the meeting with the patient and its close.

The student should after completed placement within anesthetic care (3hp):
- be able to apply principles of ensuring of free airway relevant to ambulance care.

The student should after completed placement within delivery care (1.5hp):
- under supervision train on situations in the care at the uncomplicated labour.

Part 1: Medical subjects 1.5 HE credits
- Drugs relevant to the nurse practitioner within ambulance care.

Part 2: Nursing within ambulance care 6 HE credits
- Principles for assessing vital parameters and identification of acute medical and surgical conditions based on relevant assessment instruments.
- Assessment and nursing of individuals with mental disease.
- Medical technology and patient security
- A-HLR
- Relevant laws, ordinances and safety precautions current ambulance care.
- Information transfer in the nursing chain (SBAR)
- Preventive of care injuries and nursing-related infections, hygienic and aseptic principles
- Medical Advanced Simulation

Part 3: Placement 7.5 HE credits
- Placement within ambulance care, anaesthesia - and delivery care.
- Preparation and proficiency training in view of placement.
- Nursing-related equipment in ambulance
- Ergonomics and locomotion technique
- Principles for free airway
- Delivery care from the perspectives of the ambulance nurse

The working methods aim to train a scientific approach through active knowledge acquisition, problem-solving, critical analysis and reflection. In this course, lectures, group discussions, individual study assignments, literature studies, proficiency training, simulation and placement occur.

The course is web-based and is carried out full-time equivalent 40 hours a week. The course includes 15 HE credits and it is included approximately 4 - 5 compulsory meetings on KI Södersjukhuset. In largest possible months is located these days connecting. Other time is carry out the studies via web-based learning management system.

The placement on 5 weeks are located within county council of Stockholm's counties. It can by agreement between involved parties be carried out outside Stockholm's counties. The placement includes 40 hours/week (full-time studies) of which about 32 hours/week is located to nursing. Day -, evening - and night shifts occur, other time includes theoretical studies.

Compulsory parts:
Participation in A-HLR, simulation and placement are compulsory. We absence at compulsory activities åligga it the student to contact responsible to discuss consequences of absence.

Part 1: The examination is based on patient cases, fritext and multiple-choice questions and is carried out individually through written examination.

Part 2: The examination consists of a written individual examination that is based on patient cases where knowledge current nursing within the ambulanssjukvåden be integrated with scientific literature.

Part 3: Assessment is carried out under placement within ambulance care. Professional supervisor and/or adjunct clinical lecturer give bases of assessment according to established evaluation form for placement (BeVut). At risk for failure, responsible university teacher tillsammans med professional supervisor and student should establish a written planning for the continued the placement.

Underlying grades, it is required that the following parts are carried out
• Compulsory activities
• Written individual examination
• Clinical education

For the grade passed in the course is required that all subparts should be graded with at least passed. To pass with distinction in the course is required that part 1 and 2 are graded with Passed with distinction and passed grade in part 3 placement. Grades are assigned by examiner.

Limitation of number the examination - and placement occasions:
For written examinations, it is required that student has right. Students without approved results after three completed examinations may be offered to retake parts or a course once more. Failed clinical education may be done once more.

Too late submitted examination assignments are not observed. Students who not have delivered in time, be referred then to the re-examination that should be given two to sex weeks according to KI's guidelines after the examination result on the first examination has been informed. Times for examinations are announced at the beginning of the course.

The examiner may with immediate effect interrupt a student's clinical rotation (VFU), or the equivalent, if the student demonstrates such serious deficiencies in knowledge, skills or attitudes that patient safety or patient confidence in healthcare is at risk. When clinical rotation is interrupted according to this, it implies that the student fails in the current part, and that one clinical rotation opportunity is used up.

In such cases, an individual action plan should be set up for required activities and examinations, before the student is given a possibility for a new clinical rotation in the course.

Times for examinations are announced at the beginning of the course.

The course has been cancelled and was offered for the last time in the autumn semester of 2012.

Course evaluation takes place in accordance with the guidelines established by the Board of Education.
