Specific entry requirements
Professional qualification as a nurse certified by the National Board of Health and Welfare. Nurse degree of 180 HE credits or Bachelor's degree in nursing about at least 180 HE credits. English and Swedish language skills equivalent to English A and Swedish B at Swedish upper secondary school are also required.
Objectives
Aim
The aim of the course is to give preconditions based on the central concepts of the nursing: human, nursing care/relation, health and environment and under supervision be able to carry out a person-oriented perioperative anaesthesiological nursing. In addition, the aim of the course is to give preconditions for the student to deepen knowledge and skills within nursing and medical care for patients that go through anaesthesia and surgical treatment and facilitate an evidence-based attitude as nurse practitioner.
Expected learning outcomes part 1: Anesthesia care - theoretical education
On completion of the course, the student should be able to:
• On the basis of an ethical and socio-cultural perspective, respect the patient's autonomy, safety and integrity and be able to explain the perioperative caring process in accordance with the central concepts.
• Be able to explain the importance of interprofessional collaboration in the perioperative team.
• Show knowledge and understanding about evidence-based perioperative nursing care and best practice within anaesthesia nursing care including hygiene, pharmacology, physiology and pathophysiology, and evaluate their care.
• On the basis of a person-oriented perspective argue for choice of appropriate anaesthetic methods and explain for safe use of medical technology.
Expected learning outcomes part 2: Placement (VFU).
On completion of the course, the student should be able to:
• On the basis of an ethical and socio-cultural perspective respect the patient's autonomy, security and integrity and apply the perioperative caring process in accordance with the central concepts for nursing.
• Be able to evaluate and reflect on the importance of the interprofessional collaboration in the perioperative team and their role in the team.
• Apply evidence-based perioperative nursing care and best practice within anaesthesia nursing care including hygiene, pharmacology, physiology and pathophysiology, and evaluate their care.
• On the basis of a person-oriented perspective discuss and argue for choice of appropriate anaesthetic methods and with a patient safety perspective identify and analyse patients risks in anesthesiology.
• Be able to count and safely administer medications in relation to current laws and regulations.

Teaching methods
The working methods aim to train a scientific approach through active knowledge acquisition, problem-solving, critical analysis and reflection.
In this course, lectures, seminars, group assignments, individual study assignments, literature studies, proficiency training, simulation and placement occur. Then the course is web-based can seminars and group assignments also be carried out virtual in real time or asynchronous (the discussion goes on over a long period of time).
The education that is web-based is carried out full-time equivalent 40 hours a week. In each module about 7.5 HE credits, approximately 3-4 compulsory meetings are included on KI Campus Huddinge. In largest possible months is located these days connecting. Other time is carry out the studies via a digital learning management system with written assignments, examinations, virtual discussions etc It is required, because you have basic computer science and access to computer with Internet connection.
The placement on the four weeks is located to an anesthesia department within county councils of Stockholm's county. It can by agreement between involved parties be carried out outside Stockholm's counties. The placement includes 40 hours/week (full-time studies) of which about 32 hours/week is located to nursing. Day and evening shifts occur. Student has not straight to compress the placement.
Examination
Part 1: Be examined individually through written examination.
Part 2:
Half-time - and final assessment is carried out under placement. Professional supervisor and/or adjunct clinical lecturer give bases of assessment according to established evaluation form for placement (BeVut). At risk for failure should, latest at the mid-way assessment, responsible university teacher in collaboration with professional supervisors and student establish a written planning for the continued the placement.
Drug dosage is examined through a written examination that requires the right of 100 % to pass.
Compulsory activities in the course are seminars and written assignments. Absence at compulsory activities arrive it on the student to contact responsible to discuss consequences of absence.
Underlying grades, it is required that the following parts are carried out
• Compulsory activities
• Written individual examination in part 1 and 2
• Clinical education
For a Pass grade in the course, it is required that all expected learning outcomes are satisfied which implies passed results in part 1 and 2 and active participation in compulsory parts.
To pass with distinction course is required passed with distinction results in part 1, passed results written examination in part 2 and passed with distinction grade in part 2 placement. Grades are assigned by examiner.
Limitation of number the examination - and placement occasions:
For written examinations, it is required that student has right. Students without approved results after three completed examinations may be offered to retake parts or a course once more. Failed clinical education may be done once more.
Too late submitted examination assignments are not observed. Students who not have delivered in time, be referred then to the re-examination that should be given two to six weeks according to KI's guidelines after the examination result on the first examination has been informed. Times for examinations are announced at the beginning of the course.
The examiner may with immediate effect interrupt a student's clinical rotation (VFU), or the equivalent, if the student demonstrates such serious deficiencies in knowledge, skills or attitudes that patient safety or patient confidence in healthcare is at risk. When clinical rotation is interrupted according to this, it implies that the student fails in the current part, and that one clinical rotation opportunity is used up.
In such cases, an individual action plan should be set up for required activities and examinations, before the student is given a possibility for a new clinical rotation in the course.
Times for examinations are announced at the beginning of the course.
Transitional provisions
The course has been cancelled and was offered for the last time in the fall semester of 2011. The course has been replaced with another, and examination will be provided according to the guidelines in the syllabus for 2AN009.

Course evaluation takes place in accordance with the guidelines established by the Board of Education.
