Midwifery led Pregnancy-, Labour- and Postpartum Care, 7.5 credits

Total at least 75 university credits in sexual and reproductive health (the Midwifery Programme) or the equivalent.

Knowledge and understanding
The student should
- have knowledge of how to care for the mother and the infant in a midwifery led mode of care with a focus on continuity during uncomplicated pregnancy, labour and postnatal period,
- be able to acquire information about and critically review the current mode of care,
- be able to describe the evidence for the current mode of care.

Skills and ability
The student should
- be able to assist the woman and her family during pregnancy, birth and postnatal period and thereby use his/her senses and knowledge to correct compile and analyse the information resulting from his/her examination and assessment,
- to be able to care for the woman and the infant based on the holistic perspective that the mode of care offers and in accordance with appropriate medical knowledge,
- develop his/her ability to identify, support and strengthen the healthy aspects of the family process during pregnancy, childbirth and postpartum period,
- to develop the ability to work with full responsibility in the caring team.

Values and attitudes
- acquire a professional sensitivity and be able to give appropriate advice to and to support parents.
- reflect upon the mode of care based on the midwife's ethical code.
- analyse ethical dilemmas and his/her own ethical behaviour.

The course offers an education environment that allows the student to follow women during pregnancy, birth and postpartum period up to 12 weeks after the birth of the infant in order to promote the complex understanding and holstic understand of the life event to become a parent. A midwife is always present in the birthing room. The mode of care facilitates caring skills without the over-use of high-tech aids. During training the students have the opportunity to participate in/ to conduct parental classes and breastfeeding counselling. Counselling in fertility regulation and counselling on sexual life matters is included in the education.

The ideology of care is permeated by respect for the parents' wishes and choices. All work is organised as team work and is based on mutual respect for one and another's work and assessments.

The student performs the care of one's own but in consultation with a midwife. During the training the student should perform appropriate assessments and observations and should write a report where these activities should be linked to theory. This report should be presented at a seminar.

To pass, it is required that the student received a passed grade during training and has participated in seminars with approved results.

The course-leader decides if and how absence from training should be compensated. Without the students having participated in compulsory parts or compensated absence from training the course can not be registered in student registry (LADOK).

The examiner can immediatly discontinue the training of a student if the student lacks essential knowledge, skills or attitudes needed to ensure patient's safety. If the training is discontinued for this reason, it implies that the student fails in the current part of training one clinical training opportunity has been consumed.

In such cases, an individual plan of action should be set up which points out what activities and knowledge controls are needed before the student will be offered a new opportunity for training.

Course evaluation will be carried out in accordance with the guidelines established by the Board of Education.

The teaching language is Swedish unless foreign students participate in the course. in such cases, the teaching language is English.
