Specific entry requirements
Registered nurse certified by the National Board of Health and Welfare. Nurse degree of 180 HE credits or Bachelor's degree in nursing about at least 180 HE credits. English and Swedish language skills equivalent to English A and Swedish B at Swedish upper secondary school are also required.
Students who fail a clinical placement (or equivalent) as a result of demonstrating such a serious lack of knowledge, skills or attitude that patient safety or the patients' confidence in medical care is at risk, will only be qualified for a new clinical placement once the individual action plan has been carried out.
Objectives
Physiology and psychology of reproduction 12 credits (Part 1)
The aim for the part is that the student should be able to:
Knowledge and understanding
- explain the anatomy, physiology and endocrinology of the reproductive organs,
- explain the embryo and the fetal development and the physiology of the placenta,
- explain physical changes during pregnancy, labour and post partum care including breast feeding,
- identify and describe methods that are used to examine the woman and the foetus/the infant's physical health during pregnancy, childbirth and post partum care,
- explain pain physiology and pain relief methods during labour and analyze the mechanism of different methods, efficiency and adverse drug reactions,
- describe psychological theories about attachment, bonding and parent-infant interaction and explain and reflect on the family's need of care and psychosocial support,
- integrate knowledge of the physiological and psychological development during pregnancy, labour and post partum care,
- show knowledge of regulatory frameworks, control documents and guidelines within current fields.
Skills and ability
- apply the knowledge about physiology and psychology of the reproduction so that she/he can use this knowledge in a safe way in clinical activities.
Judgement and approach
- reflect on ethical attitudes during pregnancy, labour and post partum care,
- reflect over how the use of technology, materials and drugs influence the environment and cycle within current fields.
Gynaecological and sexual health and fertility regulation 10.5 credits (Part 2)
The aim for the part is that the student should be able to:
Knowledge and understanding
- show in depth knowledge of gynaecological disease,
- explain human sexual development and sexual physiology,
- explain the mechanisms behind methods for fertility regulation,
- explain the mechanisms behind methods for induced abortion,
- explain the background of organisation of gynaecological pap smear and measures that should be taken at deviant results,
- explain methods to prevent STI (sexually transmitted infections),
- show knowledge of regulatory frameworks, control documents and guidelines within current fields.
Skills and abilities
- perform and analyze results of gynaecological examination,
- plan communication and give information about STI and contact tracing,
- plan and carry out the care of women with gynaecological disease and women in abortion situation,
- carry out and analyze methods of communication about sexuality,
- analyze completed caring measures.
Judgement and approach
- reflect on the situation of abused women,
- apply an ethical attitude in the care and follow laws and regulations,
- reflect over how the use of technology, materials and drugs influence the environment and cycle within current fields.
Reproductive Health in a transcultural perspective 4.5 credits (Part 3)
The aim for the part is that the student should be able to:
Knowledge and understanding
- problematise and analyze the living conditions including sexuality, fertility and family life of women and men from a national, global and transcultural perspective.
Judgement and approach
- reflect over one´s own and others' background and current living conditions in a power perspective to be able to use the understanding when working with women and men,
- apply an equality perspective in accordance with everyone´s right for care on equal terms.
Scientific theory and methods 3 credits (Part 4)
The aim for the part is that the student should be able to:
Knowledge and understanding
- show in depth knowledge in research design and method.
Skills and ability
- show ability to identify and argue for strengths and weaknesses with different research designs and methods,
- show ability to systematically search and review scientific articles.
Judgement and approach
- apply an evidence-based attitude.
A scientific and professional approach is applied througout the entire course.
Content
The course consists of four parts:
Physiology and psychology of reproduction, 12.0 hp
The part includes theoretical knowledge about physiological processes, methods for health supervision during pregnancy, labour and post partum care and breast feeding. In this part, theoretical knowledge of psychological aspects on pregnancy, childbirth and family formation and the family's need of care are also included as well as psychosocial support and communication theories.
Gynaecological and sexual health and fertility regulation, 10.5 hp
The part includes theoretical education about gynaecological diseases, gynaecological pap smear, sexology, fertility regulation, STI, involuntary childlessness and induced abortion, proficiency training in gynaecological palpation and IUD insertion. Ethical issues in the area are analyzed and discussed. The situation for abused women is highlighted and discussed.In this part, clinical placement within gynaecological health and care and field studies are included.
Reproductive Health in a transcultural perspective, 4.5 hp
The part includes theoretical knowledge about the living conditions of women and men including sexuality, fertility and family life from a national, global and transcultural perspective.The part also concerns gender aspects and equality.
Scientific theory and methods, 3.0 hp
The part includes in depth studies in scientific theory and methods and systematic literature search and critical review of literature.
Teaching methods
The teaching is based on a problem-oriented and collaborative approach to learning in which the tasks provide opportunities for the student to take active responsibility for their learning.
The teaching methods are lectures, seminars, clinical training and clinical placements. Seminars and clinical placements are compulsory.
The course coordinator decides whether, and if so how, absence from compulsory course elements can be made up. Study results cannot be reported until the student has participated in compulsory course elements or compensated for any absence in accordance with instructions from the course coordinator.
Examination
The grades for all parts are amalgamated into one grade for the whole course.
Physiology and psychology of reproduction 12 credits (Part 1)
The student is examined through written individual examinations.
Gynaecological and sexual health and fertility regulation 10.5 credits (Part 2)
The student is examined through a written examination and oral and written seminar assignment in gynaecological disease and gynaecological caring. To pass, the student should have completed the clinical placement.
Reproductive Health in a transcultural perspective 4.5 credits
The student is examined through seminar and written report.
Scientific theory and methods 3 credits
The student is examined through seminar and written examination.
Students who do not pass a regular examination are entitled to re-sit the examination on five more occasions. Students without approved results after three examinations can be offered to retake the course or parts of it once more; subject to availability If the student has failed six examinations/tests, no additional examination is given. Each occasion the student participates in the same test counts as an examination. Submission of a blank exam paper is regarded as an examination. In case a student is registered for an examination but does not attend, this is not regarded as an examination. Home examination that has been opened via the learning management system counts as an examination session even if the examination is not submitted. Late submissions of examinations are not accepted. Students who have not submitted on time are referred to re-examination.
The examiner may, with immediate effect, interrupt a student's clinical placement (or equivalent) if the student demonstrates such serious deficiencies in knowledge, skills or attitude that patient safety or patient confidence in healthcare is at risk. If a clinical placement is interrupted in this way the student is deemed to have failed that element and to have used up one clinical placement opportunity. In such cases, an individual action plan should be set up stating which activities and tests are required before the student is qualified for a new clinical placement on the course. The clinical training can be repeated once.
To pass the course the student must pass all examinations as well as participating in compulsory education elements.
Transitional provisions
The course has been cancelled and was offered for the last time in the spring semester of 2017. The course has been replaced with another, and examination will be provided according to the guidelines in the syllabus for 2BM019, 2BM029, 2BM025 and 2BM030.
Other directives
Course evaluation will be carried out according to the guidelines established by the Board of Higher Education.
