General requirements - A very good command of English, corresponding to 550 TOEFL scores, or a very good command of Swedish, corresponding to a pass in the TISUS-test - Three years of study at a study programme in Medicine - Ability to take a medical history and to perform a physical examination of a patient - Basic computer knowledge Specific requirements: - Passed medical school examinations in basic neuroscience and internal medicine with some knowledge of basics in clinical neurology.

By the end of the course, the student should be able to: • Recognize, describe, explain and evaluate common symptoms and signs of diseases of the nervous system • Diagnose and make a management plan for the most common/important diseases within the field • Search and evaluate the internet for medical information on best evidence-based treatment of diseases of the nervous system • Write case right-ups • Reflect on various professional aspects in medicine, such as attitudes, ethics, gender, ethnicity, age, health economy and health care system

The clinical rotation/elective comprises 40 hours duty per week at the Karolinska University Hospital. An individual schedule is made with auscultation in various units within the department, such as out-patients clinic and in-patients wards and emergency room. Time is given for studies of literature and internet searches.

Participation/auscultation in daily clinical activities at the department. The student is required to study the course literature and write log book/reports. Compulsory attendance Attendance to all clinical visits/duties is required. The supervisor decides how the student should compensate for any failure to attend.

A log book should be written by the student and has to be presented to the supervisor. The log book should include relevant information about the patients encountered each day. The supervisor will decide upon one or more themes that the student has to explore more in detail and write a report on (e.g. my most interesting cases, literature reviews). This report has to be presented no less than 5 days before the end of the rotation in neurology.

A student’s work-based education may be ended immediately if the student demonstrates such a serious lack in terms of knowledge, skills or attitude that patient safety or patients’ confidence in medical care is jeopardised. If the work-based education is ended in this way, an individual action plan should be drawn up detailing the activities and knowledge checks required before the student may continue with work-based education. A student who has failed the work-based education due to such a serious lack in terms of knowledge, skills or attitude that patient safety or patients’ confidence in medical care is jeopardised is qualified to a new opportunity only when the individual action plan has been completed.
