Clinical rotation, Inflammatory Diseases, 6 credits

General requirements - A very good command of English, corresponding to 550 TOEFL scores, or a very good command of Swedish, corresponding to a pass in the TISUS-test - Three years of study at a study programme in Medicine - Ability to take medical history and to perform a physical examination of a patient - Basic computer knowledge Specific requirements Passed medical school’s basic course in internal medicine or equivalent

The main outcome of the course is that the student after having finished the course has acquired a more profound knowledge and skills in the management of patients with chronic inflammatory diseases. The student shall be able to describe, diagnose and treat common chronic inflammatory diseases in different medical disciplines. The student shall also be able to describe and diagnose some less frequent but clinically important chronic inflammatory diseases and autoimmune diseases. The student shall also be able to use the Internet to search for information and to write reports on for example the most interesting patient cases or a literature review in a defined subject field.

The clinical rotation comprises 40 hours duty per week in the Karolinska University Hospital, at Solna and Huddinge including seminars, auscultations and case discussions. An individual schedule is made with auscultations in various units within the Department of Medicine, including Rheumatology, Respiratory medicine, Dermatology, Gastroenterology and Nephrology. The auscultations will take place in inpatient wards, and outpatient clinics. The extent of participation in patient care is determined by the skill, level of motivation, and initiative of the student. Time is given for studies in literature and internet searches.

The rotation includes introductory lectures/seminars in different areas of relevance for chronic inflammatory diseases and autoimmunity including basic and clinical immunology and autoantibody testing. Moreover, this rotation program includes continuous personal supervision delivered by the physicians at the department. The student is required to study the course literature and to write log book/reports.

1) A log book should be written by the student and has to be presented to the supervisor on a weekly basis. The log book should include relevant information about the patient encountered each day. 2) The supervisors will decide upon one or more themes that the student has to explore more in detail and write a report on (e.g. my most interesting cases, literature reviews). This report has to be presented no less than 5 days before the end of the rotation in chronic inflammatory diseases and autoimmunity.

The course will be evaluated in accordance with the guidelines established by the Board of Education. A student’s work-based education may be ended immediately if the student demonstrates such a serious lack in terms of knowledge, skills or attitude that patient safety or patients’ confidence in medical care is jeopardised. If the work-based education is ended in this way, an individual action plan should be drawn up detailing the activities and knowledge checks required before the student may continue with work-based education. A student who has failed the work-based education due to such a serious lack in terms of knowledge, skills or attitude that patient safety or patients’ confidence in medical care is jeopardised is qualified to a new opportunity only when the individual action plan has been completed.
