The aims of the course are to achieve advanced knowledge and skills concerning the application and integration of specific nursing with medical care and treatment, and from ethical, cultural and pedagogical aspects be able to take a position to a professional attitude in a high-technological environment. On completion of the course, the student should be able to: identify and evaluate the needs of specific nursing in monitoring the vital functions the post-operative and/or intensive care patient, by planning, carrying out, documenting, reporting and evaluating the care. independently identify and apply laws, regulations and safety precautions related to intensive care. based on ethical and multicultural aspects protect the patient and the autonomy, security and integrity of the family. independently explain and apply the basic principles of medical engineering equipment in connection with monitoring/surveillance and treatment of the intensive care patient. independently evaluate and apply hygienic and aseptic principles in the nursing work in a post-operative or intensive care ward Demonstrate knowledge and understanding in current research and evidence-based nursing and discuss the relationship between science and proven experience in specific nursing and medical science within intensive care.

Preparation and proficiency training for the placement to nurse and be nursed in the intensive care. post-operative care. The A-I principle, the creation of a free airway and knowledge of materials, care of an intubated and tracheotomised patient, airways including knowledge of materials, surveillance systems concerning monitoring of invasive blood pressure, hygiene and aseptic techniques, ventilator knowledge, laws, regulations and safety precautions. Placement in intensive care, the nursing process, surveillance of the patient's vital functions, basic medical engineering equipment, monitoring of invasive blood pressure and infusion pumps, observe and register safety in the local environment of the intensive care patient, basic hygiene procedures in the suction of upper and lower airways, the handling of invasive catheters, minor surgeries and dressing wounds. identify and interpret different expressions of pain, participate in choices of appropriate strategies to handle and control pain. fluid balance and nutrition, and apply enteral and intravenous methods. communication and interaction with patient, family and other staff in the clinic.

Working forms The course is both campus and web-based (distance). The working method aims to train a scientific approach through active knowledge acquisition, problem-solving, critical analysis and reflection, and training the ability of oral and written presentation. Therefore, the following parts are used in this course: Scheduled course introduction with cohort groups and group discussions in the computer platform PingPong, seminars, lectures, proficiency training, simulations, placement. The course also includes individual works, and works in groups. Lectures Proficiency training Group discussions via the computer platform PingPong Group discussions Seminars Supervision during placement The distance education The distance education is IT-based and is characterised by independent and collaborative learning. Different working methods such as individual study assignments, work in groups, virtual discussions and seminars and lectures are used. The number of physical hits is limited to at most 2 days/7.5 credits.

For a Pass with distinction, all subparts should be graded with the grade Pass with distinction. In case of absence, it is up to the student to discuss consequences of the absence with the course coordinator.. Limited number of examinations or practical training sessions A student without an approved result after three examinations can be offered to take the course once more. However, there are at most six examination opportunities for each course. Examination times are announced at the beginning of the course. During the placement, a continuous assessment of the students' achievements takes place. Half-time and final assessment should be conducted. Professional supervisors provide a basis for assessment according to the evaluation forms. For students at the risk of failure, a written plan should be set up, at the latest at the mid-way assessment, by the course coordinator together with a professional supervisor. The student should have satisfied the requirements of the component parts in order to get a Pass grade in the entire course. Grades are assigned by examiner. Failed placement may be re-done once
