Logopedics 2, 10.5 credits

For admission to the clinical part Voice disorders 1 (T4), at least the Pass grade is required in the courses Logopedics 1, Psychology 1 and 2, Linguistics 1 for speech and language pathology students, and module 1-4 in the course Phonetics 1 for speech and language pathology students, and General and specific medicine 1. Furthermore, at least the Pass grade is required in the part Training of the student's own voice and speech (in the course Logopedics 2).

The course consists of five parts: Neuropsychology, Training of the student's own voice and speech, Voice disorders 1, Normal speech, voice and swallowing function and the speech, voice and languages of Hearing-impaired people. The expected learning outcomes of the different parts is described individually. Neuropsychology, 3 HE credits ( Neuropsychology) The student should be able to account for basic theories within neuropsychology with a special orientation towards cognitive functions and languages. The student should be able to identify relevant neuro-anatomical structures and be able to describe at a general level neuroradiological examination methods. The student should be able to account for the neurological correlates of linguistic functions. Training of the student's own voice and speech 2, 1.5 HE credits ( Training of the student's own voice and speech 2) The student should demonstrate awareness of posture, respiration, relaxation, articulation and voice function in practical exercises, and be able to describe the meaning of these concepts. The student should, in practical exercises, be able to use a well-functioning voice technique. The student should be able to instruct voice exercises and be able to describe the aims of these. The student should be able to apply different relevant techniques in voice exercises. The student should be able to describe the connection between voice, personality, and body languages. The student should be able to make voice perceptual descriptions of the voice function/varying voice quality. The student should, in role play be able to use the therapeutic role in several fictitious patient meetings. Voice disorders 1, 3 he credits ( Voice disorders 1) The student should be able to account for definition, aetiology, voice cord status, symptoms and indications for treatment of various voice disorders. The student should upon supervision be able to carry out a first visit including medical history taking, description of voice function and treatment procedure, give voice ergonomic advice and suggest actions. The student should be able under supervision to plan, formulate aims, carry out, evaluate and document voice treatment considering diagnosis, voice function, personality and work/life situation in the patient treated by the student. Development of normal speech, voice and swallowing function 1.5 HE credits ( Development of normal speech, voice and swallowing function) The student should be able to account for craniofacial anatomy and growth and be able to account for the muscles and function of the speech organs . The student should be able to name and account for the cranial nervs 5 6, 7, 9, 10, 11, 12 and their function. The student should be able to describe and account for the development of the oral motor function and the development of the early sucking from neonatal reflexes to acquired behaviour in relation to postural control. The student should be able to account for normal deglutition function in children and adults. The student should be able to account for the relationship between eating and speech functions in normal development of children 0-3 years. The student should be familiar with basics in dentistry, i. e. know the names and number of the milk teeth and the primary teeth, and the occlusal development and its terminology, and relations between occlusal function, tongue motor behaviour and articulation. The student should participate actively in practical eating and feeding exercises, and be able to handle arising problems. Language, speech and voice in hearing-impaired patients, 1.5 HE credits ( Language, speech and voice in hearing-impaired patients) The student should be able to describe, at a general level, pedagogical aims and methodology in hearing and speech language training of hearing-impaired pre-school and school children, and get an insight in the work on hearing rehabilitation of adults. The student should be able to account for how a hearing impairment affects the individual's voice, speech and language. The student should be able to describe the teamwork in hearing health care and the organisation of the hearing health care, at a general level.

Neuropsychology ( Neuropsychology) 3 HE credits The part intends to provide a specialisation of neuro-anatomical and neurophysiological knowledge, and provide basic knowledge in neuropsychology with a special orientation towards cognitive functions and language. Training of the student's own voice and speech 2, 1.5 HE credits ( Training of the student's own voice and speech 2) The part aims to make the student learn to master the own voice and speech, become aware of the relationship between respiration, voice and body posture, get an understanding of the relationship between voice and personality, and how psychological factors affect the voice function. Voice disorders 1, 3 HE credits ( Voice disorders) This part intends to, on the basis of knowledge in anatomy, physiology, laryngology, neurology and psychology, provide theoretical and practical knowledge of different voice and respiratory disorders and their treatment. Development of normal speech, voice and swallowing function 1.5 HE credits ( Development of normal speech, voice and swallowing function) This part intends to provide knowledge about development and growth aspects, and about normal neurological and motor basic functions in the oral cavity and throat from infant to adult. Language, speech and voice in hearing-impaired patients, 1.5 HE credits ( Language, speech and voice in hearing-impaired patients) This part intends to provide knowledge about hearing impairments' effect on language, speech and voice in children and adults.

The theoretical teaching is provided in lectures, seminars, group exercises, teacher-supervised discussions, video demonstrations and role plays. The clinical training in this part Voice disorders 1 comprises own patient work under supervision and is given in small groups of 2-6 students. The course also includes clinical auscultations.

Neuropsychology: Compulsory attendance at group exercises and seminars. Oral presentation of group assignment and take-home exam. Training of the one's own voice and speech: Compulsory attendance at group exercises and individual training and written examination. Normal swallowing, speech and voice function: Written examination of the cranial nervs and the muscles and function of the speech organs. For other sub-parts of this part, compulsory attendance applies. Voice disorders 1: Compulsory attendance at clinical/practical education and written examination. The languages, number and voice of the hearing-impaireds: Compulsory attendance at lectures and group exercises. Written examinations are corrected anonymously (identification number of each student). In case of failure of a written examination, according to KI's local guidelines, the student is entitled to a total of six examination sessions per part, the first of which in 14 days after the announcement of the examination results. The second re-examination takes place at the end of the term, and remaining re-examinations in connection with the beginning of the term (re-take session). In case of absence in compulsory teaching, the student alone is responsible for contacting the responsible teacher. A Pass grade in the clinical/practical education requires (from a special assessment instrument): Satisfactory attendance, completion of medical records, demonstration of adequate logopedic knowledge and skills, and the ability to cooperate. In the assessment, patient approach and a professional attitude are also considered. This assessment is set in relation to the term the student is on. Students who have not passed the clinical/practical education, have the right to re-do the current part once. In each individual case, it is considered whether the theoretical component of the part should be tested again. After two failed clinical/practical education periods in the same part, the student may apply to the programme committee for exemption to take the part once more, .

The part Neuropsychology, 3 HE credits has an interdisciplinary orientation and is carried out in cooperation between three departments, Department of Psychology and Department of Linguistics at Stockholm University, and Department of Clinical Science, Intervention and Technology, CLINTEC Karolinska Institutet. Each department is responsible for 3 HE credits, see syllabus Psychology 2 and Linguistics 1 for speech and language pathology students. The part Neuropsychology thus comprises a total of 9 HE credits. Application for an exemption from admission requirement is submitted to the Programme Committee of the Study Programme in Speech-Language Pathology Course evaluation will be carried out in accordance with the guidelines established by the Board of Education. Course evaluation of each part will mainly be web-based.
