Professional issues and ethics 1, 3 credits

On completion of the course, the student is expected to be able to:

• at a general level describe and exemplify voice, speech and language disorders and swallowing disorders in children, adolescents and adults
• schematically describe different team models in health care and their importance for the patient
• account for the implication of the concepts of equality, environment and sustainability
• reflect on the speech pathology profession and activities
• discuss central ethical concepts and principles
• search for and interpret information in library catalogues and databases

The course contains general lectures in the field of speech pathology, the subject areas of equality and sustainable development and on basic ethical concepts and on how scientific information is organised and structured. The course also contains an orientation in clinical work through auscultations with speech pathologists within different areas of activity and group discussions of the speech pathologist role.

Self-study through web-based course, lectures, group exercises and auscultations with a professional speech pathologist. Write log book in connection with auscultation.

Auscultation and log book, as well as some lectures and group exercises, are compulsory.

The course coordinator decides how absence from compulsory course elements can be made up.
Study results cannot be reported until the student has participated in compulsory course elements or compensated for any absence in accordance with instructions from the course coordinator.
Absence from a compulsory course element could mean that the student can not retake the element until the next time the course is offered.

Individually written assignment
The assignment is corrected anonymously using an identification number for each student.

To pass the course, attendance at compulsory parts is also required. Students who do not pass a regular examination are entitled to re-sit the examination on five more occasions. If the student fails six examinations/test there will be no additional examination.

The course has been cancelled and was offered for the last time in the fall semester of 2015. Examination will be provided until the spring of 2018 for students who have not completed the course.

The course evaluation will be carried out according to the guidelines established by the Board of Education. The course evaluation will mainly be completed using online audience-response systems (mentometers).
