Specific entry requirements

General admission requirements.

Objectives

On completion of the course, the student is expected to be able to:

  • account for the cornerstones and general objectives of Social psychology
  • apply socio-psychological knowledge in order to analyse and explain human interaction in different situations

Content

The knowledge that the course provides should be the basis of a basic ability to make socio-psychological analyses of social phenomena and behaviours, both at a group and individual level. Specific emphasis is placed on sections dealing with the interaction between the individual and the situation, how the individual can draw conclusions about other social individuals (social derivation), and how the individual's conclusions about, and behaviour vis-à-vis, other individuals can be affected by the social situation (social affect) and social-cognitive processes such as norms, conformity, obedience and attribution.

Teaching methods

Lectures and seminars, some with applied exercises. Compulsory attendance occurs at certain occasions in connection with seminars/exercises.

Examination

Written assignment, and a seminar.

To pass the course, attendance at compulsory parts is also required.

In the event of a failed assignment, an opportunity is given to resubmit or complete the assignment during the current semester according to the course supervisor's instructions. An examination assignment that is submitted late is invalid and must not be included in the examination documentation for the grade decision. However, the examiner has the opportunity to take into account whether the student has special reasons for the delay. A student who has not passed the regular examination session has the right to participate in five further examination sessions. The third examination session is the next regular examination session on the course.

The examiner decides whether, and if so, how absence from compulsory educational elements can be taken again. Study results cannot be reported until the student has participated in compulsory course elements or compensated for any absence in accordance with instructions from the examiner. Absence from a compulsory course element could mean that the student can not retake the element until the next time the course is offered.

If there are special grounds, or a need for adaptation for a student with a disability, the examiner may decide to deviate from the syllabus's regulations on the examination form, the number of examination opportunities,  the possibility of supplementation or exemptions from the compulsory section/s of the course etc. Content and learning outcomes as well as the level of expected skills, knowledge and abilities may not be changed, removed or reduced.

Transitional provisions

Examination may take place under the previous reading list during a period of one year after the renewal of the reading list. Examination will be provided during a period of two years after a close-down of the course.

Other directives

The course is given by the Department of Psychology, Stockholm University, where all teaching in the course takes place.

The course replaces the part Social psychology in the course Psychology 1, 2LG002.

The course will be evaluated according to guidelines established by the Committee for Higher Education.
