Medicine 1: Anatomy and Physiology, 4.5 credits

Anatomy, 2.5 credits On completion of the course, the student should be able to:

• describe the basic principles of the structure of the human body for the structure, of the cell and the tissues including the respiratory organ system, the skull with the nasal cavity and paranasal sinuses as well as the anatomy of the sensory organs with an emphasis on the auditory organ
• account for how the central and peripheral nervous system is organised with the major ascending and descending pathways, the vascular supply of the brain and the cranial nerves, as well as identify and define neuroanatomical structures including the neuroanatomy of language functions as well as the anatomy of the central auditory system
• account for the musculature of the intraabdominal pressure and respiration and its innervation as well as for the larynx, pharynx and oral cavity with their muscles and nerves.

Physiology, 2.0 credits On completion of the course, the student should be able to:

• account for the function of neurons and muscle cells, sensory physiology, the function of the autonomic nervous system, motor function and the physiology of the respiratory and circulatory organs
• account for the basic function of the speech organs as well as the basic function of the peripheral and the central auditory system

The course contains two parts, Anatomy and Physiology. The course content in each of the two parts constitutes an important precondition for continued studies of diseases and conditions that have special connection to the auditory system as well as disturbances in voice, speech, language and deglutition.

This part includes theoretical starting points for the basic anatomy of the human body, the structure of the cell and the tissues, the anatomy of the skull and the sensory organs. Further, the central and the peripheral nervous system are treated, the vascular supply of the brain, the twelve cranial nerves, the neuroanatomy of language functions and the anatomy of the central auditory system. Furthermore, the musculature of the respiratory system and the anatomy of the trachea, pharynx and oral cavity is treated.

This part includes teaching of the function of nerve and muscle cells, the function of the autonomic nervous system, motor function as well as the physiology of the respiratory and circulatory organs. Further, the basic function of the speech organs as well as the basic function of the auditory system are included.

Lectures as well as group work. Group work is compulsory.

The course coordinator decides whether, and if so how, absence from compulsory course elements can be made up. Study results cannot be reported until the student has participated in compulsory course elements or compensated for any absence in accordance with instructions from the course coordinator. Absence from a compulsory course element could mean that the student can not retake the element until the next time the course is offered.

Anatomy, 2.5 credits Written examination

Physiology, 2.0 credits Written examination

To pass the course is required passed on all included parts.

Written examination is corrected anonymously. To pass the course, attendance and active participation in compulsory parts are also required.

Students who do not pass a regular examination are entitled to re-sit the examination on five more occasions. At each course occasion, one regular examination and two re-examinations are given. Each occasion the student participates in the same test counts as an examination. Supplementary qualification of written examination assignment is counted as an examination. Submission of a blank exam paper is regarded as an examination. Examination for which the student registered but did not participate is not counted as an examination.

Examination can be carried out according to an earlier literature list during a period of one year after the date of a renewal of the literature list. Examination will be provided during a period of two years after a possible closing of the course.

Course evaluation will be carried out in accordance with the guidelines established by the Board of Higher Education.
