Speech and Voice Theory, 7.5 credits

For admission to semester 3, the student may have no more than a maximum of 15 credits remaining from preceding semesters within the Study Programme in Speech Language Pathology.

On completion of the course, the student is expected to be able to:
- account for how speech is formed (psychological, physiological and acoustic aspects)
- account for how speech is perceived (acoustic and perceptual aspects)
- account for the fundamental features in a selection of representative phonetic theories
- put phonetic inspired theoretical assumptions in relation to the fundamental features of theories of neurological, biological, psychological and signal processing character

The course intends to give an advanced overview of the speech organs and the functional anatomy and physiology of the auditory organs as foundation for studies of models and theories of production and perception Muscular and neurophysiological aspects on the speech production and the mechanics of hearing are discussed. The relationship between articulation and acoustics are studied, by means of the concepts source, filter and models of the relation between formants and cavity. The acoustics of the different sound classes and the articulatory, acoustic and perceptual correlates of the distinctive features, are brought up.

Lectures.

The examination consists of individual written assignments and written examination.

The written examination is graded anonymously (using a identification code number for each student). Students who do not pass the written examination are entitled to another five examination occasions, the first within fourteen days of the notification of the exam result. The third re-examination occasion is the following regular examination occasion of the course. Submission of blank exam is counted as an examination occasion. Examination occasion for which the student has registered but did not participate in is not considered an examination occasion.

Examination may take place with the previous literature list during a period of one and a half year after the renewal of the literature list. Examination will be provided during a period of three years after a possible shut-down of the course.

The entire course is given by the Department of Linguistics at Stockholm University.

Course evaluation will be carried out according to the guidelines established by the Board of Higher Education. Course evaluation for each module will be mainly web-based.
