Specific entry requirements

For admission to semester 2, the student may remain a maximum of 15 credits from semester 1.

Objectives

On completion of the course, the student should be able to:

  • account for typical language development in children at different linguistic levels
  • describe environmental factors that influence the child's language development
  • Account for and describe typical reading and writing acquisition

Content

During the course the child's babbling, speech and language development are discussed, for example early auditory and visual speech perception, prosody and the development of the sound system and development of syntax and lexicon. Universal and language specific factors in acquiring language, parent-child communication, typical reading and writing acquisition and alternative augmentative communication are also discussed.

Teaching methods

The teaching is provided in the form of lectures.

Examination

The examination consists of written examination.

The written examination is graded anonymously (using a identification coded number for each student). Students who do not pass the written examination are entitled to five more examination occasions, the first within fourteen days of the notification of the exam result. The third re-examination is the next regular examination occasion of the course. Submission of a blank exam paper is regarded as an examination occasion. Examination occasion for which the student has registered but not participated in, does not count as a examination occasion.

Transitional provisions

Examination can take place according to an earlier literature list during a period of one year after the renewal of the literature list has been made. Examination will be provided during a period of two years after a possible shut-down of the course.

Other directives

The course, as a whole, is given at the Department of Linguistics, Stockholm University. The course evaluation will be carried out in accordance with the guidelines established by the Board of Higher Education.
