Specific entry requirements

For admission to semester 2 apply that student may remain with no more than 15 credits from previous semester in The Study Programme in Speech-Language Pathology

Objectives

On completion of the course the student should be able to:

  • plan and implement documentation of communicative situations by means of instrumental methods (video and sound recordings) and non-instrumental methods
  • handle collected material in a correct way and discuss ethical aspects of video and sound recordings
  • reflect on role as observer
  • use relevant terminology and relevant tools to process annotate and analyse video and sound recordings

Content

The course gives an overview over use of video and sound recordings for observation and documentation. Above all gives it a preparation before education's child observations. Different types of observation techniques and non-instrumental methods for documentation of communicative behaviours are concerned. In the course includes a lecture and laboratory elements about recording techniques (microphone placement, recording level, recording environment, room acoustics, camera placement and illumination). Course give also experience of software for processing annotation and analysis of video and sound recordings as well as encryption of files in laboratory elements. Further, a lecture about research ethics is included, form for informed agreement and other ethical aspects around recordings. Course is completed with a final review with discussions and experience sharing about role as observer and recording leaders illustrated with example from own recordings.

Teaching methods

Teaching consist of lectures laboratory sessions and a final review.  Furthermore observations and recordings except timetabled time.

Examination

The course is assessed through an individual written assignment and active participation in a final review.
Final review is based on experiences and reflections from all components in the course, including recording and home assignments in the course.
Student who do not pass the regular examination are entitled to re-sit the examination at five more occasions. The third examination is the following regular examination in the course. As examination, the times are counted when the student has participated in the same test. Submission of blank exam is counted as examination. Examination to which student registered but not participated be counted not as examination.

Transitional provisions

Examination can be carried out according to an earlier literature list during a period of one year after the date of a renewal of the literature list. Examination will be provided during a period of one year after a possible closing of the course.

Other directives

The course is implemented in full of The Department of Linguistics, Stockholm University, where all teaching in the course is also given.

The course evaluation will be carried out according to the guidelines established by the Board of Higher Education.
