Specific entry requirements

Pass grade on all courses in the study programme in medicine from semester 1 to 10. In addition to this the student should be registered on the remaining courses in the program


The aims that underlie the Integrated Final Examination are based on the general aims of the medical degree according to the Higher Education Ordinance and the programme syllabus: The student should demonstrate the knowledge and ability required for the physician profession and to complete the public service (AT) that is required to obtain entry requirements as a physician.

Knowledge and understanding
For the medical degree, the student should
– demonstrate knowledge of the disciplinary foundations of the field and an understanding of current research and development work and knowledge of the relationship between science and proven experience and the importance of the relationship for professional practice.
– show both broad and advanced knowledge in the medical field including knowledge about and understanding of relations in society that influence health for different groups depending on amongst other things ethnicity, age and sex.
– show knowledge of economics and organisation that is significant for health care, and show knowledge of relevant statutes

Skill and ability
For the medical degree, the student should
– demonstrate advanced ability to independently diagnose the most common and most important diseases in patients and treat these in collaboration with the patient
– demonstrate the ability to initiate and carry out health promotion and preventive work in health care for both individuals and groups of patients,
– demonstrate the ability to critically and systematically integrate and use knowledge and analyse and assess complex phenomena, issues and situations
– demonstrate advanced ability to inform and teach different groups and to supervise
– demonstrate the ability for teamwork and cooperation with other professional groups in all areas of healthcare,
– demonstrate the ability to explain orally and in writing measures and treatment results with concerned parties and document these in accordance with relevant statutes
– show advanced ability to initiate, participate in and carry out improvement work and evaluate medical treatments.

Judgement and approach
For the medical degree, the student should
– show self-knowledge and empathetic ability
– show a holistic view on the patient from a scientific and humanistic viewpoint with special consideration for human rights
– show an ethical and professional attitude vis-à-vis patients and their family, and
– show the ability to identify his/her need for additional knowledge and to continuously develop his/her skills.

For the various parts, the following specific expected learning outcomes apply:

Module 1: Situation based examination
The student should at the examination be able to
- show how one, in a professional way, elicits a systematic medical record and carries out a physical study and based on it formulates a reasonable hypothesis (preliminary diagnosis) and suggests the laboratory, imaging and function examinations that can confirm or reject the hypothesis in an efficient way.
- explain the scientific background of the stated symptom or status findings
- show how one also communicates with the patient, staff and possible relatives in more complex situations in a professional way. Examples of complex situations can be a patient with communication problems or many diseases at the same time; giving difficult notices; motivating a change of life style or replying to questions on prognosis.
- integrate and use theoretical knowledge, attitude and judgement in clinical arguments with both laymen and colleagues
- demonstrate the ability to, in an ethical way, independently and critically, identify, formulate and solve problems
- describe and explain how basic explanation mechanisms can contribute to understanding of health and illness in a clinical perspective
- discuss relevant scientific and social medical aspects regarding explanation mechanisms of significance for health and illness

Module 2: Reflecting assignment:
The student should
- Reflect on the individual learning of skills necessary for the profession and if the the aims of the programme syllabus have been achieved as above.
- with self-knowledge formulate a well based action plan for his/her continued learning after the medical degree.


The course consists of two parts.

Scenario based examination, 2 hp The examination consists of theoretical and practical stations and is scenario-based. The aim is to assess the student's ability to take medical history and status, give notice and suggest investigation, diagnosis, treatment and follow up. Reflection on and discussion if mechanisms are included. The cases are based on some of the integrating assignments. Reflecting assignment, 1 hp This part is an opportunity to summarise how the aims of the education have been achieved and a tuning before continued work as physician. The examination consists of writing a reflection on the student's development during the education. In the dialogue, the mentor that the student has had during the education and an external examiner usually participate.

Teaching methods

The working methods of the course are based on the pedagogical model of the programme curriculum that promotes self-regulated learning and communication . Through mainly independent work and/or in dialogue with fellow students, the student develops an integrated understanding of the contents of the whole medicine programme. In this course, a reflecting assignment and an examination that assess integrated knowledge and understanding, practical skills and attitudes rather than detailed factual knowledge is included.


To pass the course, it is required that both the parts of the course are passed. If a part is failed, this part only needs to be supplemented. In addition to regular opportunities, two (2) make-up opportunities are organised a year.

Limited number of examinations or practical training sessions:
The number of examination and practical training sessions follow Karolinska Institutet's local guidelines, which implies that the number of examinations is limited to six (6).

In the case of failure in one or both of the parts, an individual action plan is established where the activities and support that should lead to the student being given the opportunity to acquire sufficient knowledge/skills and change attitude to pass the examination at the coming make-up opportunity are stated

Transitional provisions

If a course has been closed down or undergone major changes, at least two additional examinations (excluding regular examinations) in the previous contents are provided during a period of a year from the date of the change.

Other directives

Course evaluations are carried out after the course by means of questionnaire.
