Objectives

The aims of the course The aims of the course are advanced knowledge and skills in the framework of the Graduate Diploma in Specialist Nursing concerning surgery health care. To be able to apply, understand and integrate specific nursing with medical care and treatment on the basis of ethical, cultural and pedagogical aspects and develop a professional attitude in a perioperative nursing environment. On completion of the course, the student should be able to identify and argue for central questions in the perioperative nursing and be able to document and report on the basis of ethical and multicultural aspects, protect the patient's autonomy, integrity, security and safety, identify and account for risks and prevention in connection with the surgery, identify, assess and apply measures to maintain vital functions, identify, account for and apply medical engineering equipment, independently account for and apply hygienic and aseptic principles, independently account for, explain and indicate application of laws, regulations and safety precautions, demonstrate knowledge and understanding of science and proven experience in the perioperative care

The contents and planning of the course Preparation and proficiency training before clinical education Clinical education within surgery health care The organisation of the health care surgery The operating nurse in the team The perioperative nursing process Assessment and measures of the patient's vital functions Aseptic and hygienic principles such as personal preparation, preoperative hand disinfection including sterile coat and gloves, and skin preparation and draping of the patient Medical engineering equipment in the operating theatre such as ventilation, operating table, operation lamp, diathermy, aspirator and equipment including gas and electricity Correct placement of the patient in different positions for surgery Instruments and suture knowledge, instrumentation techniques and assistance at surgery Instrumental care such as disinfection, cleaning and sterilisation. Security measures to prevent confusion, and that materials accidentally are left behind in connection with surgery Laws and regulations

Teaching methods

Working forms The course is both campus and web-based (distance). The working method aims at training a scientific approach through active knowledge acquisition, problem-solving, critical analysis and reflection, and training the ability to oral and written presentation. Therefore, the following parts are used in this course: Scheduled course introduction, cohort groups and group discussions in the computer platform PingPong, seminars, lectures, proficiency training and placement. The course includes individual work as well as work in groups. The distance education is IT-based and is characterised by independent and collaborative learning. Different working methods such as individual study assignments, work in groups, virtual discussions and seminars and lectures are used. The number of physical hits is limited to at most 2 days/7.5 credits. Compulsory parts of the course - Cohort groups - Seminars - Proficiency training - Clinical education - Final assessment in placement (VFU) according to evaluation forms

Examination

Examination Participation in compulsory parts Individual written examination assignment For a Pass grade, all subparts should be graded with a Pass, at least. For a Pass with distinction, all subparts should be graded with the grade Pass with distinction. In case of absence, it is up to the student to discuss consequences of the absence with the course coordinator.. Limited number of examinations or practical training sessions A student without an approved result after three examinations can be offered to take the course once more. However, there are at most six examination opportunities for each course. Examination times are announced at the beginning of the course. During the placement, a continuous assessment of the students' achievements takes place. Half-time and final assessment should be conducted. Professional supervisors provide a basis for assessment according to the evaluation forms. For students at the risk of failure, a written plan should be set up, at the latest at the mid-way assessment, by the course coordinator together with a professional supervisor. The student should have satisfied the requirements of the component parts in order to get a Pass grade in the entire course. Grades are assigned by examiner. Failed placement may be re-done once
