Objectives

The aims of the course The aims of the course are advanced knowledge and skills in the framework of the Graduate Diploma in Specialist Nursing with respect to surgery health care. To be able to apply specific nursing and leadership according to the perioperative nursing process integrated with medical care and treatment. On the basis of an ethical, multicultural and pedagogical attitude be able to reflect on and discuss relationships between science and proven experience in the perioperative care. On completion of the course, the student should - Identify, assess and analyse the patient's individual needs of nursing based on data collection and preoperative talk by identifying risks and taking preventive measures. - Independently plan and carry out individually adjusted nursing on the basis of an evidence-based working method in a high-technological nursing environment. - Independently be able to apply evaluate and analyse evidence-based hygienic and aseptic principles to protect the patient against infection. - Independently evaluate by analysing the results of given nursing and medical treatment after the post-operative talk with the patient and the documentation. - Analyse and apply the leading and teaching function of the surgery nurse in the nursing work. - Describe and apply medical engineering equipment in the surgical care.

The contents and planning of the course Contents: - Advanced medical technical equipment; Knowledge on materials and equipment - Biological material - The perioperative nursing process - Ethics and multiculture - Hygiene and aseptic - Instrumentation technique - Instrumental care and - process - Keeping and reporting of medical records - The leading function of the surgery nurse - The operating nurse in the team - Priority, organisation and nursing environment - Risk assessment and security measures in connection with surgery - Disease transmission - Specific nursing measures

Teaching methods

The contents and planning of the course The course is both campus and web-based (distance). The working method aims at training a scientific approach through active knowledge acquisition, problem-solving, critical analysis and reflection, and training the ability of oral and written presentation. Therefore, the following parts are used in this course: Scheduled course introduction, cohort groups and group discussions in the computer platform PingPong, seminars, lectures and proficiency training. The course includes individual work as well as work in groups. The distance education is IT-based and is characterised by independent and collaborative learning. Different working methods such as individual study assignments, work in groups, virtual discussions and seminars and lectures are used. The number of physical hits is limited to at most 2 days/7.5 credit points. Compulsory parts of the course - Cohort groups - Case seminar; the nurse and the patient in the perioperative care - Proficiency training - Seminars - Final assessment in placement (VFU) according to evaluation forms - Clinical education - Professional supervision/reflection during placement

Examination

Examination Participated compulsory parts Clinical examination For a Pass grade, all subparts should be graded with a Pass, at least. For a Pass with distinction, all subparts should be graded with the grade Pass with distinction. In case of absence, it is up to the student to discuss consequences of the absence with the course coordinator.. Limitation of the number of examinations or placements A student without an approved result after three examinations can be offered to take the course once more. However, there are at most six examination opportunities for each course. Examination times are announced at the beginning of the course. During the placement, a continuous assessment of the students' achievements takes place. Half-time and final assessment should be conducted. Professional supervisors provide a basis for assessment according to the evaluation forms. For students at the risk of failure, a written plan should be set up, at the latest at the mid-way assessment, by the course coordinator together with a professional supervisor. The student should have satisfied the requirements of the component parts in order to get a Pass grade in the entire course. Grades are assigned by examiner. Failed placement may be re-done once
