Objectives

On completion of the course, the student is expected to:
 
Knowledge and understanding

  • Be able to account for study designs commonly applied in psychotherapy research and their respective strengths and weaknesses
  • Be able to relate how research aims and questions inform choices of study design and methods
  • Be able to account for different quantitative and qualitative methods for data collection and criteria to assess applicability of these methods
  • Be able to explain basic statistical concepts
  • Be able to explain basic concepts for thematic analysis

 
Skills and abilities

  • Be able to design a study and make a time schedule for data collection and study completion
  • Perform basic statistical analyses
  • Perform basic qualitative text analyses
  • Write an outline based on quantitative and qualitative outcomes
  • Critically assess scientific papers: introduction, design, methods, results, ethics and conclusions

 
Values and attitudes

  • Be able to reflect on ethical aspects of choice of research aims, study design and scientific communication
  • Be able to identify areas in scientific method where own continuous training would be beneficial 

Content

The course comprises teaching on study design, data collection, data analysis and how to report results.

Teaching methods

Teaching takes place in the form of recorded lectures available through internet, practical coursework and seminars.

Examination

Attendance on seminars is mandatory. Students will not pass in the event of more than 20% absence from seminars. Examination will be completed in three steps:

  • Internet-based examination of literature and lectures
  • Completion of practical coursework
  • Oral group presentation of a paper at a seminar.

The paper should be handed in 1 week before the seminar.Active participation on the seminar when papers are presented is required.

Transitional provisions

An examination will be made available for a period of one year in the event of the course being discontinued or a new course syllabus being introduced.

Course evaluation will be carried out in accordance with the guidelines established by the Board of Education.
