Specific entry requirements

Professional or Bachelor of Science of at least 180 credits in health care. Furthermore, knowledge is required in Swedish and English equivalent to Swedish B and English A (with at least the Pass grade).

Objectives

The aim of the course is that the student should acquire advanced knowledge of measurement of quality of life within nursing research.

On completion of the course, the student should be able to:
- Account for and be familiar with the concept of life quality as it occurs in nursing and medicine
- Explain how to evaluate the validity and reliability of an instrument
- Demonstrate capacity to systematically be able to review and discuss scientific articles critically
- Argue for the choice of design and analysis methods
- Account for and argue for scientific and clinical relevance of quality of life research

Content

- Presentation of the concept of quality of life as defined in the scientific literature

- Psychometric evaluation (validity and reliability) of measuring instruments measuring quality of life
- Critical review of scientific articles
- Design and commonly occurring analytical methods in quality of life research

Teaching methods

The education is conducted by distance education. At most three in-service training days with compulsory attendance in the course site (Huddinge). Between the in-service training days, the students work with literature studies and web-based discussions via written assignments. Teacher support is given via the learning platform PingPong.

Examination

In case of absence from compulsory parts, turn to the course director.

The individual written examination assignment consists of critically reviewing scientific articles according to established criteria. The reviewed articles constitute a basis for discussion in the final seminar.

Transitional provisions

The course has been cancelled and was offered for the last time in the fall semester of 2009. Examination will be provided until the spring of 2017 for students who have not completed the course.
