Objectives

The aim of the course is to reach in-depth knowledge and understanding for social work in health care, comprising theoretical bases as well as their applications. The students will develop ability to integrate theoretical knowledge with problems seen in the social situation of patients and their relatives. The students will enhance their ability to analyse these problems and accordingly choose evidence based methods and social interventions.
The student will after the course be able to
- explain and discuss concepts relevant to social work in health care
- relate the discipline to possible applications within the field
- seek and assess evidence for relevant methods
- independently assess social needs and choose theoretically derived and appropriate interventions within the actual context.

Content

Up-date of theoretical concepts relevant to social work in health care; systems theory, psychodynamic and cognitive theory, theory of change, narrative and existential psychology. Focus will be laid upon applications of these theories. The concept of salutogenes and empowerment will be covered.
Boarders to other disciplines will be discussed.
Analysis of a chosen aspect of social work in health care is expected.

Teaching methods

Lectures, group-discussions and seminars will take place. Of special importance are forms supporting the student's own activities. Group discussions and seminars use a modified case-methodology.

Examination

Examination takes place by the students active participation in seminars. These seminars deal with individual assignments as well as group assignments.
One written individual paper will examine understanding of aspects of the course literature.
The grade VG in the course, needs VG in both individual tasks and G in the group assignment.

Transitional provisions

The course has been cancelled and was offered for the last time in the autumn semester of 2012. Examination will be provided until the spring semester of 2021 for students who have not completed the course
