Specific entry requirements
A Bachelor ' s degree or a professional degree of at least 120 credits is required in nursing, pharmacy, pharmaceutical science or dietetics. Or 150 credits from the Study Programme in Nursing or the Study Programme in Medicine. Swedish and English language skills equivalent to Swedish B and English A at Swedish upper secondary school are also required.
Objectives
On completion of the course, the student should be able to:
- explain and discuss central concepts within diabetes in health care
- relate the disciplinary domain to applications within the health care
- search and evaluate evidence for relevant methods in the area
- from both basic physiology and epidemiology reflect over and explain and different aspects on health and disease,
- had developed the ability to search and evaluate information in scientific articles within diabetes
- give and explain treatment suggestions
- explain underlying causes and genesis mechanisms to diabetes, aetiology,
- explain how the function of the body and the bodies is influenced by diabetes, pathophysiology.
Content
The main contents of the course include the historical account of the diabetes, epidemiology, cost development, aetiology, pathogenesis, beta cell dysfunction, mechanisms for insulin resistance, therapeutic and diagnostic possibilities, future views regarding prevalence and incidence of diabetes regional and its complications and new treatment forms.
The course gives basic knowledge about metabolism and the diabetes. The contents encompass basic metabolism and physiology on cell, bodies - and whole body level to diabetes pathogenesis and diabetes treatment and further to complications caused by diabetes.
Teaching methods
Lectures, group work, case.
80% attendance is required for a pass grade. The student can compensate possible absence with specific advanced assignment in consultation with responsible teacher.
Examination
Oral group examination. Furthermore presentation of case studies before teacher and group.
Transitional provisions
Examination will be provided during a time of two years after a possible close-down of the course. Examination can be according to an earlier literature list during a time of one year after the date when a renewal of the literature list been made.
