Specific entry requirements

A minimum of 120 credits is required in healthcare, medicine or social care. And proficiency in Swedish and English equivalent to Swedish B/Swedish 3 and English A/English 6.

Objectives

The aim of the course is to increase the knowledge of social, psychological and biological similarities and differences between men and women, its consequences for disease, health and medical care.

On completion of the course, the student should:

  • be able to explain and discuss the concepts of sex and gender
  • show deeper understanding on how gender medicine is defined and constructed and independently be able to analyse and in groups discuss which importance gender has for health and disease,
  • be able to reflect over on how biological and socio-cultural aspects influence health and disease from a gender perspective
  • critically be able to evaluate research articles from a gender perspective and be able to account for the concept of gender bias
  • independently be able to analyse study - and treatment methods within healthcare from a gender perspective,
  • be able to reflect on patient approach within the healthcare from a gender perspective.

Content

The course deals with different studies of social, biological and psychological similarities and differences between sexes, its consequences for disease, health and medical care. Both general and work specific problems will be studied to increase the understanding between the gender actors within healthcare.

Teaching methods

The course is an IT based distance education and is characterised by self-reflection and collaborative learning. It is fundamental for participants to take responsibility for their learning and to search and evaluate new knowledge. Different working methods, such as individual study assignments, work in groups, discussions and virtual seminars take place during the course. The course emphasizes reflecting attitudes.

Examination

Written presentation of a medical case resolution.

Students failing in the regular examination, are entitled to participate in five more examinations.. If the student has failed six examinations/tests, no more examinations are offered. Every time the student performs the same test counts as an examination session, which for this course implies handing in a written assignment.

Transitional provisions

The course has been cancelled and was offered for the last time in the fall semester of 2014. Examination will be provided until the fall of 2018 for students who have not completed the course.
