Specific entry requirements

Degree of Bachelor of Science in Physiotherapy of at least 180 credits or a Bachelor's Degree in Physiotherapy. And proficiency in Swedish and English equivalent to Swedish B/Swedish 3 and English A/English 6.


The student should

  • be able to analyse, assess and evaluate physiotherapeutic assessment, treatment and evaluation methods for patients with neurological disability
  • be able to argue both for advantages and disadvantages of different physiotherapeutic methods in neurological disability and suggest a treatment for various patient cases
  • achieve advanced knowledge in, and independently demonstrate a critical and scientific attitude to any subject area within the framework of the course
  • demonstrate skills to communicate this orally and in writing to other students in the course.


The course deals with the function of the nervous system, physiotherapy for stroke and other brain injuries, multiple sclerosis, Parkinson disease, neuromuscular diseases and spinal cord injuries.

Teaching methods

The teaching is based on a problem-oriented and collaborative approach to learning in which the tasks provide opportunities for the student to take active responsibility for their learning. The used teaching methods are  lectures (1 / 3), laboratory sessions, seminars, group assignments, oral- and written individual assignments (2 / 3).

Attendance is required at scheduled course meetings. Absence is compensated by the student with written complementary assignments concerning the learning activities that one is absent from. Between the course meetings time is required for reading the course literature, work with indivudual tasks and assignments on the course web.


The forms of examination are:

  • active participation in lectures/seminars and at laboratory sessions with oral presentation of study assignments
  • written and oral presentation of patient cases according to the case method and active participation in case seminars
  • written and oral presentation of individual assignments on methods of measurement and treatment methods, and active participation in seminars on measurement methods and literature.

Students who do not pass a regular examination are entitled to re-sit the examination on five occasions.more. If the student has failed a total of six examinations/tests, no additional examination is given. Each occasion the student participates in the same test counts as an examination. Submission of a blank exam paper is regarded as an examination. In case a student is registered for an examination but does not attend, this is not regarded as an examination.

If there are special grounds, or a need for adaptation for a student with a disability, the examiner may decide to deviate from the syllabus's regulations on the examination form, the number of examination opportunities,  the possibility of supplementation or exemptions from the compulsory section/s of the course etc.  Content and learning outcomes as well as the level of expected skills, knowledge and abilities may not be changed, removed or reduced.

Transitional provisions

Examination will be provided during a time of one year after a possible close-down of the course. Examination can take place according to an earlier literature list during a time of one year after the date when a renewal of the literature list has been made.

Language of instruction: Swedish.

Course evaluation is made orally and in writing twice during the course and with Karolinska Institutet's course evaluation on completion of the course.

The course will not be credited in a degree together with another course the student has completed and passed which completely or partly corresponds to the contents of this course.
