Specific entry requirements

Bachelor's degree in Dental Technology and the course Theory and methodology of science in odontology, 15 credits, or the equivalent. In addition, further 15 credits in completed courses are required. And proficiency in Swedish and English equivalent to Swedish B/Swedish 3 and English A/English.
 

Objectives

On completion of the course, the student should be able to:

  • show advanced knowledge in scientific methods and problem-solving and apply the knowledge that has been communicated in the main field of study
  • design and formulate research questions, plan, write and present a research plan within a restricted field
  • systematically collect and analyze relevant material and explain choice of methods related to the scientific question
  • reflect over ethical aspects in their own research study
  • independently plan, carry out, compile data, evaluate and write a scientific work that contributes to in-depth knowledge within the main field of study
  • show ability to orally communicate, and in writing clearly account for and discuss their conclusions, knowledge and the arguments that underlies these in dialogue with different groups
  • analyze and critically review others' research and how this should be communicated
  • apply the scientific publication process

Content

The student independently plans and writes a research plan within chosen field and presents this at seminars. This is carried out with consultative supervision of an appointed supervisor. Once the research plan has been accepted, the experiment or collection of material and data may proceed. Results from the study should be compiled and reported regularly in the form of progress reports in a seminar or written report.

A scientific paper will be written containing: Summary, Introduction, Materials and Methods, Results and Discussion. The quality and the extent of the work should correspond to a publishable article intended for a scientific journal within the dental field. The summary should also be written in English.

The scientific paper will be presented for students, supervisors and examiners. The student also should review and publicly discuss another student's degree project.
 

Teaching methods

The course format is supervision, literature studies, project planning, research, progress reports, seminars, to write a scientific article and review/oppose another student's work.

Compulsory attendance is required at the timetabled seminars. In the event of absence, compensation tasks in agreement with course management are required. The mandatory seminars and lectures will be held at the Department of Dental Medicine, Huddinge, while the research project may be carried out elsewhere under the guidance of an appointed supervisor.
 

Examination

The project work will be presented in seminars once the other compulsory elements are completed. The work is reviewed of examiner and be objected of a student from the course.

f the student does not submit the thesis at the normal time or does not carries out the examination, they must wait until the next examination opportunity. Examinations are carried out once a semester.

Transitional provisions

Examination will be provided during a time of two years after a possible close-down of the course.
