Specific entry requirements

A Bachelor's degree or a professional degree of at least 120 credits is required in healthcare or medicine or a Bachelor of Science in Social Work. Or completed education to clergyman . In addition to this is required that the applicant works in activities the applicant where meets people in sorrow. English and Swedish language skills equivalent to English A and Swedish B at Swedish upper secondary school are also required.

Objectives

The student should on completion of the course
- be able to reflect over and apply theories of mourning processes at his treatment of grieving persons
- be able to assess when professional treatment can be necessary
- be able to reflect over and evaluate how gender and cross-cultural perspectives influence mourning processes

Content

The course deals with the following aspects on the field of bereavement work
- Theorising and current research on process of mourning
- Understanding boundaries between normal and pathological grief
- Different treatment models for grief counseling
- Grief from a cross-cultural perspective
- Grief and life philosophy
- Adults and Grief
- Children and Grief

Teaching methods

The course is based on a problem-oriented and collaborative view on learning. Lectures and seminars are included. Literature studies and clinical cases are starting point for seminar discussions.

Examination

The written examination is a home assignment. The oral study assignments are in the form of examining seminars where preparation is required in the form of literature studies and discussion questions.

To pass the course compulsory attendance at 80% of the teaching and active participation in seminars is required. Absence can by agreement with the course director be compensated by a written assignment.

Transitional provisions

Examination will be provided during a time of two years after a possible close-down of the course. Examination can take place according to earlier literature list during a time of a year after the date when a renewal of the literature list been made.

Other directives

The course is partly based on 1QA066 and can therefore not be used in the same higher education qualification.
