Objectives
The course focuses on people with vertigo and balance disorders, and clinical, diagnostic and physiopathological aspects are highlighted during the course. The overall aim of the course is to provide deeper knowledge in the field of balance disorders.
The expected learning outcomes of the course
After completing the course, the student should be able to
• Identify and explain the anatomical and physiological aspects of the balance system
• Explain the interaction between different sensory systems in the postural control
• Show knowledge of various symptoms, concepts and diagnoses of vertigo problems
• Designate, suggest and motivate treatment and rehabilitation methods
• Identify test battery for audiovestibular investigation
• Critically review and evaluate scientific literature on issues concerning patients with vertigo and balance disorders, and also summarize them in a report.
Content
The course focuses on people with vertigo and balance problems. Causes, test methodology and treatment options are highlighted through lectures, demonstrations and seminars. The course provides a theoretical overview and in-depth understanding of how the postural system works. The course describes both healthy and pathological conditions as well as the effect on mental well-being. Auditory aspects of vertigo diseases are refered to.
Review of basic and clinical research is included.
Teaching methods
Lectures, seminars, demonstrations and tutorials. Teaching about literature search in medical databases is included
Course coordinator assesses whether and in which case, absence from compulsory education can be recalled. Before the student has taken part in the compulsory education or resumed absence according to the course administrator's instructions, the study results can not be finalized.
Absence from a compulsory education may mean that the student can not take the opportunity until the next course is given
Examination
A scientific literature study in a limited area associated with vertigo and balance problems should be written, based on scientific articles. The study shall be presented both verbally and in writing. The oral examination includes opposition and defense.
Student who are not approved after the ordinary examination opportunity are entitled to participate in further five examinations. If the student completed six failed examinations / tests, no further examination opportunity will be given. As an exam opportunity, the times are counted when the student participated in one and the same exam..
Transitional provisions
Examination can take place according to an earlier literature list during a time of one year after the date when a renewal of the literature list has been made. Examination will be provided during a time of two years after a possible close-down of the course.
Other directives
Course evaluation will be carried out according to the guidelines that are established by the Board of Higher Education. Course evaluation is carried out both through a written course evaluation at the end of the course and and through oral course forum at least once in connection with course where students can state their opinions.
