Objectives

On completion of the course, the student should: Be able to describe psychological and ethical aspects of dental and medical treatment, be able to reflect on communication patterns between different care providers and between care providers and patients in a multicultural society, be able to follow the clinic's hygiene procedures, have identified the future sphere of activity, the oral environment and have knowledge of the dental and the dental hygienist profession, be able to handle simple functions in the computerised dental record EFFICA, have knowledge and understanding of private, personal and professional talks, living-spaces and borders, be able to carry out simple relaxation exercises for patients, have established contact with his/her personal mentor and have had two meetings with the mentor group

Content

The course is divided into three parts.

Man and society, 2 hp The part comprises psychological and ethical aspects on dental and medical treatment, priority issues in care, nursing in a multicultural society and communication between different care providers and care providers and patients. My clinical self, 4 hp The part comprises psychological and ethical aspects on dental and medical treatment, priority issues in care, nursing in a multicultural society and communication between different care providers and care providers and patients. To become ones inner gardener, 1.5 hp To learn how to nurse and interview oneself and others. In the form of lectures and seminars, the difference between private and personal talks, professional talks contra private talks, and the internal and external worlds of the patient and the caregiver, is presented and discussed . The part also includes stress and stress management.

Teaching methods

The course comprises lectures, seminars, clinic-based exercises, dental record exercises, active patient cooperation with students in the later part of the dental education and a mentor dialogues.

Examination

Part 1
Man and Society 2 HE credits (Man and Society)
Examination is arranged through a take-home exam.

Part 2
My clinical I 4 HE credits (My Clinical Self)
At least 66% (4/6) attendance during the six clinic-based exercises is required for a pass grade. Students are offered two make-up sessions on two occasions at the end of the course. Discussion with a mentor is compulsory.

Part 3
To become ones inner gardener 1.5 HE credits (To become ones inner gardener)
Examination is arranged through a take-home exam.

To pass the course, each part should be passed

If the student's examination has not passed, the student gets 2 more examination opportunities. After that, the student is recommended to retake the course and is given 3 more examination opportunities. If the student has not passed after 6 trials, he/she has no more admission to the course. (HF chapter 6, section 11 a).

Transitional provisions

If the course is closed down or undergoes major changes, examination under a previous literature list and learning outcomes will be offered no more than one academic year after the implementation of the revision/close-down.

Certain elements of the part My Clinical Self are taken both by the Study Programmes in Dentistry and in Dental Technology
