Objectives
After the course, the student should be able to orally and in general writing present the embryology of the face and the oral cavity and to account for the normal odontogenesis and understand how disabilities in these structures arise. comprehensively describe and account for the normal histology in the tissue that make up the oral cavity and facial skeleton. in detail account for inflammatory and infectious conditions in the mouth's soft and hard tissues and describe healing after trauma in these tissues. account for the most common oral tumours in soft and hard tissue and their clinical appearance and have knowledge about rarer conditions. be able to describe and understand the connection between system diseases and their oral manifestations. The course gives basic skills for future interpretation of PAD results in relation to the clinical picture. Further, a basis for meaningful communication with a diagnosing pathologist is laid.
Content
The teaching in oral pathology and histology should give students specific oral pathologic knowledge with regards to general pathology, microbiology, genetics and immunopathology. The clinical manifestations of the different diseases are correlated with a histopathologic image. Correct and adequate biopsy sampling and tissue handling is an important part of the clinical process. Part 1: Oral Pathology and Histology: Soft Tissues (Oral Pathology and Histology: Soft Tissues) 4.5 HE credits This part focuses on knowledge of the soft tissues of the oral cavity, their histology and histopathology. This knowledge is required for recognising normal variations and to be able to diagnose and treat pathological conditions in the oral cavity mucosa and adjacent soft tissues. Part 2: Oral Pathology and Histology: Hard Tissues (Oral Pathology and Histology: Hard Tissues) 3 HE credits This part focuses on knowledge in histology and histopathology required for diagnostics and treatment of pathological conditions in teeth and jawbones.

Teaching methods
Part 1: Oral Pathology and Histology: Soft Tissues (Oral Pathology and Histology: Soft Tissues) 4.5 HE credits The teaching is given as whole-group lectures followed by teacher-supervised group exercises demonstrating the normal histology as well as the histopathology of pathological conditions. The demonstrations are followed by supervised scheduled exercises which give the students an opportunity to more independently go through the histological preparations, which are available on a central server. Apart from this, patient cases will be discussed and distributed for subsequent oral review, as well. Part 2: Oral Pathology and Histology: Hard Tissues (Oral Pathology and Histology: Hard Tissues) 3 HE credits The teaching is given in the form of whole-group lectures followed by exercises where the normal histology as well as the histopathology of pathological conditions are demonstrated. As in Part 1, patient cases will both be demonstrated and released for later account of the students before the course.
Examination
Part 1: Oral Pathology and Histology: Soft Tissues (Oral Pathology and Histology: Soft Tissues) 4.5 HE credits Examination is carried out through written examination. Part 2: Oral Pathology and Histology: Hard Tissues (Oral Pathology and Histology: Hard Tissues) 3 HE credits Examination is carried out through written examination. Limited number of examinations or practical training sessions If the student's examination has not passed, the student gets 2 more examination opportunities. After that, the student is recommended to retake the course and is given 3 more examination opportunities. If the student has not passed after 6 trials, he/she has no more admission to the course. (HF chapter 6, section 11 a).
Transitional provisions
If the course is closed-down or undergoes major changes, examination under a previous reading list and learning outcomes are offered, no more than one academic year (no more than 2 examinations in addition to regular examinations) after the implementation of the revision/close-down.
Other directives
Course evaluation is carried out according to the guidelines established by the Board of education. The course substitutes TLG002
