Specific entry requirements
Objectives
After the course, the student should · have sufficient knowledge of the principles of drug treatment to be able to acquire information about new drugs and treatment methods · be able to absorb all the information concerning drugs in public sources such as FASS · be able to evaluate pharmaceutical information from producers, critically.
Content
Administration of drugs, pharmaceutical preparations. The absorption, distribution and metabolism of drugs in the body . Elimination of drugs. Interactions of drugs. The modes of action of the drugs. Receptors. Principles for drugs that have an effect on the nervous system, with examples of especially important drugs Principles for drugs that that have an effect on the heart, blood vessels and the metabolism, with examples of especially important drugs Principles for drug treatment in infection and inflammation Important drugs in the treatment pain, especially in dental practice Drugs and salivary secretion Local anaesthesia (partly taught together with Clinical teachers).
Teaching methods
Due to lack of an ideal textbook, basic knowledge is provided with lectures. Certain sections are studied at teacher-supervised seminars.
Examination
Examination is carried out through written examination. After the written examination, there are parts of the course that are not examined. Group work during the first course weeks (before examination) are compulsory. Missed exercises should be compensated by a make-up assignment from the course provider. If the student's examination has not passed, the student gets 2 more examination opportunities. After that, the student is recommended to retake the course and is given 3 more examination opportunities. If the student has not passed after 6 trials, he/she has no more admission to the course. (HF chapter 6, section 11 a).
Transitional provisions
If the course is closed-down or undergoes major changes, examination under a previous reading list and learning outcomes are offered, no more than one academic year (no more than 2 examinations in addition to regular examinations) after the implementation of the revision/close-down.
