Clinical Odontology 5, 10.5 credits

The course consists of 6 parts Part 1: Cariology 5: 0.9 HE credits After the course, the student should • be able to account, theoretically, for and discuss the caries disease, its causes and treatment • identify patients with high caries risk, and suggest appropriate prophylactic measures • clinically carry out individually adjusted cariologic disease and prevention treatment after individual cariologic investigation • critically analyse and account for relevant restorative/prophylactic treatment and its implementation for each individual caries lesion • critically analyse choice of filling materials • identify complications after restorative treatment and address them Part 2: Endodontics 4: 0.5 HE credits After the course, the student should • be able to critically analyse and assess the topographic anatomy of the tooth and the pulp cavity • theoretically, diagnose pathological conditions in both pulp and periradicular tissue, and suggest adequate treatment strategies • critically assess and evaluate endodontical status • carry out an endodontic treatment according to the principles of cavum preparation, pulp ectomy and restorative endodontic treatment. Part 3: Prosthodontics 3 - Fixed and removable prosthodontics: 3.8 HE credits After the course, the student should • be able to analyse and assess oral health based on a prosthetic perspective • understand and analyse indications of both fixed and removable prosthodontics • offer the patient alternative treatment suggestions and be able to explain advantages and disadvantages of the different alternatives • carry out a prosthetic treatment planning concerning both fixed and removable prosthodontics • identify correct occlusion and carry out adjustment of fixed and removable prostheses • assess the function of previously completed prosthetic treatment • make a prognosis of completed prosthetic treatment Part 4: Clinical Oral Physiology 3: 2.9 HE credits After the course, the student should • know clinically applicable parts of the anatomy and physiology of the trigeminus system and the throat backbone • diagnose pathological conditions in the functional components of the masticatory system (jaw and tongue musculature, temporomandibular joints and occlusion) • etiological factors locally (bruxism, occlusion and articulation, trauma) and centrally (emotional stress and stress conditions, general joint and muscle diseases, disorders in the central nervous system and genetic factors) • carry out and document medical history taking including pain drawings and pain scales (VAS) • carry out a clinical examination of a patient with orofacial pain in jaw and tongue musculature and temporomandibular joints • know different types of treatment, including occlusal splints, bite grinding, physical therapy and pharmacological treatment, for these conditions • carry out treatment with occlusal splints, physical therapy and NSAID per os, for these conditions • critically review and assess the results of a completed treatment. Part 5: Implant Dentistry 3: 1.9 HE credits The student should, during the course, be able to • account for an intraoral radiological examination before implant treatment and decide when an enhanced X-ray examination is indicated • identify the normal anatomy of the jaws and assess anatomic limitations of implant treatment • evaluate the clinical and radiologic prerequisites for rehabilitation with implant supported prosthodontics • give patient information concerning the possibilities and limitations of the implant treatment • give information concerning surgical procedure, handling and healing times and risks with the planned treatment • give cost information Part 6: Integrated comprehensive dentistry 5 (IKV 5): 0.5 HE credits The student should during the course • be able to make a general treatment plan for patients with comprehensive treatment needs including both a disease-oriented and a rehabilitating treatment phase • understand the importance of a holistic view on the patient 's treatment needs • be able to prioritise and plan different treatment moments • be able to present and analyse on-going and planned treatment on one' s own patients • demonstrate skills and abilities in clinical dental care, achieved clinical maturity, equivalent to five terms of clinical exercise • be able to demonstrate clinical maturity by - possessing knowledge and skills to treat patients without causing injury or risk of injury in connection with examination or treatment - possess the judgement of not risking the patient's safety due to self-indulgent action or refusal to follow hygiene or safety precautions - adopt such an approach that the patient or the relatives do not feel threatened or offended, independently be able to diagnose and carry out a definite causal treatment i. e. after investigation carry out an indicated periodontal, cariologic and endodontic treatment • demonstrate ability to plan, carry out and complete the clinical proficiency training in adults dental care in accordance with current course requirements

Part 1: Cariology 5: 0.9 HE credits Seminar with an overview of theoretical/clinical cariology before examination. Interdisciplinary training in computer simulated patients (WEB-SP) before i.a. investigation and treatment planning tests (VUX test). Studies of literature. Clinical proficiency training with dental care treatment of patients with cariologic problems in the adults clinic. Part 2: Endodontics 4: 0.5 HE credits Compulsory clinical proficiency training with endodontic problems in the adults clinic. Part 3: Prosthodontics 3 - Fixed and removable prosthodontics: 3.8 HE credits • Lectures including theory in fixed and removable prosthodontics • Treatment plannings • Clinical demonstrations of removable prosthodontics • Continued clinical proficiency training in both solid and removable prosthodontics. • IT-based study materials concerning fixed and removable prosthodontics Part 4: Clinical Oral Physiology 3: 2.9 HE credits Lectures, including, joint and muscle diseases, facial pain of articulate and muscular origin, trauma injuries, sleep apnea syndromes, head-ache, neuropathic pains in the trigeminus system, diagnostic and therapeutic methods. Group/pair-wise clinical training of examination methodology and treatment of patients with orofacial pain conditions from the jaw and face region, and treatment and follow-up of these. Part 5: Implant Dentistry 3: 1.9 HE credits • Patient presentation/treatment planning • Auscultation/assistance in implant installation of an assigned patient where the students upon healing should carry out implant supported prosthodontics • Treatment and post-operative follow-up of a patient having undergone implant surgery Part 6: Integrated comprehensive dentistry 5 (IKV 5): 0.5 HE credits • Seminars and patient presentations • Clinical proficiency training in the adults clinic

Part 1: Cariology 5: 0.9 HE credits Written examination. Patient care (clinical proficiency training) is examined, when the treatment is carried out and through for each individual patient completed, by a teacher approved, written medical records including epicrisis and oral case presentation and clinical overview of completed work so called clinical examination. Practical examination is also arranged in OSCE (Objective Structured Clinical Examination) in term 9. Part 2: Endodontics 4: 0.5 HE credits The clinical proficiency training in endodontics is examined, when the endodontic treatment of a single tooth is completed and approved by a teacher. Part 3: Prosthodontics 3 - Fixed and removable prosthodontics: 3.8 HE credits • Attendance is required at compulsory course parts,see above. Missed examinations should be compensated by a make-up assignment from the course provider. • Written examination of removable prosthodontics • Patient care (clinical proficiency training) is examined, when the treatment is carried out and through for each individual patient completed written medical records, including epicrisis and oral case presentation and clinical overview of completed work so called clinical examination. • Practical examination is also arranged in term 9 in OSCE (Objective Structured Clinical Examination). Part 4: Clinical Oral Physiology 3: 2.9 HE credits Patient work is examined through approved service which implies active participation and attendance in at least 90% of the clinical shifts and the seminars (does not apply to periods of international student exchange). Absence in addition to this is compensated by making up the shift or through auscultation in the teaching clinic. Presentation of patient cases based on delivered written materials takes place orally in groups. Examination takes place through written examination (term 9) and practical examination in OSCE (Objective Structured Clinical Examination) in term 9. Part 5: Implant Dentistry 3: 1.9 HE credits Compulsory attendance in • treatment planning for fixture installation and implant prosthodontics • fixture installation in patients Examination takes place through oral patient case reporting in an implant round. Part 6: Integrated comprehensive dentistry 5 (IKV 5): 0.5 HE credits Examination takes place through oral and written presentation of implemented patient treatments in the so called clinical examination. Written examination (IKV examination) Practical examination is also arranged in OSCE (Objective Structured Clinical Examination) term 9. Limited number of examinations or practical training sessions If the student's examination has not passed, the student gets 2 more examination opportunities. After that, the student is recommended to retake the course and is given 3 more examination opportunities. If the student has not passed after 6 trials, he/she has no more admission to the course. (HF chapter 6, section 11 a). Interrupt the clinical proficiency training The examiner may with immediate effect interrupt a student's clinical proficiency training if the student demonstrates such serious deficiencies in knowledge, skills or attitudes that patient safety or patient confidence in healthcare is at risk. When the clinical proficiency training is interrupted like this, it implies that the student fails in the clinical part of the course. In such cases, an individual action plan should be set up, where it comes clear which activities and examinations are required before the student is given the possibility to clinical proficiency training in this course. Eligibility Students who have failed the clinical proficiency training as a consequence of demonstrating deficiencies in knowledge, skills or attitudes so serious that patient safety or patient confidence in healthcare is at risk are qualified for resuming the clinical proficiency training only when the individual action plan has been completed.

If the course is closed down or undergoes major changes, examination under a previous literature list and learning outcomes will be offered no more than one academic year after the implementation of the revision/close-down.

Course evaluation is carried out in accordance with the guidelines established by the Board of Education.
