Specific entry requirements

Bachelor's degree or vocational degree worth at least 180 higher education credits. Proficiency in the English language documented by an internationally recognized test such as TOEFL with a total score of at least 79 (internet based), 550 (paper based), 213 (computer based), IELTS with a total score of at least 6,0 (no band less than 5,0), or other documentation that certifies English language skills equivalent to English B at Swedish upper secondary school.

Objectives

After completion of the course the student should be able to: - Describe, explain and analyze variations in maternal and child/adolescent mortality and morbidity patterns and their determinants in and between countries and over time, including the main diseases/symptoms causing maternal and childhood mortality and morbidity and how they can be treated/prevented. - Describe, explain and analyze the main international interventions for prevention and cure of morbidity and mortality related to sexual and reproductive health and childhood/adolescence. - Describe and evaluate the vulnerability and the risks women and children are exposed to.

Content

- Variations in child and maternal mortality and morbidity and its determinants - Main diseases causing childhood mortality and morbidity during childhood and related to sexual and reproductive health and how they can be prevented and treated - The main international interventions for prevention of reproductive and childhood/adolescent morbidity and mortality, including ”Integrated Management of Childhood Illnesses” (IMCI) and “Safe Motherhood” - Vulnerability and risks – in relation to women’s position and socio-economic status and in relation to child and adolescent development, maturing and socio-economic environment

Teaching methods

The course consists of lectures, group work and literature.

Examination

Passed individual work, passed group work, active participation and presence are required to pass the course. For pass with distinction a high level at the individual work is also required, requiring a well-performed literature review and a independent analyses. Absence will result in additional tasks that must be fulfilled if it is assessed that the level of attendance is negatively influencing the students to achieve the learning outcomes. Students who do not pass the examination are offered a maximum of five additional opportunities to sit the examination.

Transitional provisions

Students who previously attended the course may sit for the examination up to two years after the last course has been held.

Other directives

The students will have the opportunity to give continuous feedback and input during the course to ensure that the course is as student-driven as possible. The course will be evaluated in accordance with the guidelines established by the board of Education.
