Specific entry requirements
Qualification in Optometry of 180 credits and professional status qualification as an optician with contact lens qualification. Or Bachelor of Science in Nursing of at least 180 credits, professional status qualification as a nurse and supplementation of 60 credits in eye care.
Knowledge in Swedish and English equivalent to Swedish B and English A (with at least the Pass grade).
Objectives
1) interpret the patient's symptoms and choose relevant examination methods in relation to the symptoms of the patient,
2) take care of (examine, treat optometrically, and refer) patients who have eye lesions or suspected pathological changes
3) describe how the most commonly occurring eye diseases are treated
4) discover ocular manifestations of systemic and neurological diseases/changes, and
5) understand the role of the optician in "shard care".
Content
The course contains the following parts: Age-related macula degeneration, glaucoma, dry eyes, cataracts, diabetes, keratitis, conjunctivitis, diseases in the front chambers, uveitis, eye diseases in children and neurological manifestations. Apart from this, the course also includes diagnostic medication and their use, study of the topography and aberrations of the eye, the use of Gonioscopy a lens and a 90D lens, visual field examination, pressure measurement and laser techniques for examination of the retina. The course is divided in three parts:
Clinical work, 2.5 hp
Clinical work comprises attendance at compulsory demonstrations, exercises and clinical work.
Assignments, 2.5 hp
Comprises submission and presentation of group a assignment and individual work.
Theoretical understanding, 2.5 hp
Comprises a theoretical understanding and application of the subject-specific contents of the course.
Teaching methods
The course is initiated with selfstudy, exercises, a theoretical overview and demonstrations. The theoretical overview is made through different tuition forms (Case methodology, whole-group lectures etc). The students are given a possibility to train practical skills but must take a great responsibility themselves.
Examination
The examination comprises:
1) Clinical examination. Examines the aims 1 to 4.
2) Assignments. Examines the aims 1 to 5.
3) Written/Oral examination. The written/oral examinations examine the outcomes 1 to 5.
In the part Clinical work, attendance at demonstrations, exercises and clinical work, and practical tests in diagnostic examination techniques is required. In case of absence from demonstrations, exercises and clinical work, compensation is discussed with course the director. The part is graded according to the scale Fail/Pass/Pass with distinction.
In this part Assignments, a presentation and approval of the group assignment are required. The part is graded according to the scale Fail/Pass.
The part Theoretical understanding is examined through written/oral examinations. The part is graded according to the scale Failed/Passed/Passed with distinction. For admission to the examination in Theoretical understanding, it is required that the part Assignments are submitted and that supplementation of the part Clinical work is completed.
The whole course is graded according to the scale Failed/Passed/Passed with distinction. A Pass grade requires that all the parts are passed For a Pass with distinction, a Pass grade in part 2, and a Pass with distinction in parts 1 and 3, is required. Criteria for evaluating the parts of the course are determined in separate documents.
When a student fails an examination, there will be an opportunity for a new examination. All in all, 6 opportunities for a new examination are provided for all parts
Transitional provisions
The course has been cancelled and was offered for the last time in the fall semester of 2011.
Other directives
Course evaluation will be carried out in accordance with the guidelines established by the Board of Education.
