Specific entry requirements

Qualification in Optometry of 180 credits and professional status qualification as an optician with contact lens qualification. Or Bachelor of Science in Nursing of at least 180 credits, professional status qualification as a nurse and supplementation of 60 credits in eye care. In addition to this: Knowledge in Swedish and English equivalent to Swedish B and English A (with at least the Pass grade).

Objectives

After the course, the student should:

1) formulate a relevant research issue within the chosen area,
2) analyse relevant literature
3) design a study on criteria for selection, choice of methods and choice of statistics
4) describe and evaluate the results in relation to the chosen method, the generalizability of the results, the strengths and weaknesses of the study and draw conclusions based on the results and evaluation of the results,
5) write a final report with logical structure and clear, grammatically correct language, and
6) act as an opponent by giving relevant criticism.

Content

The degree project can be carried out independently or in groups of 2 or at most 3. The students should decide themselves, if they want to work independently or in groups. The student/the students choose the subject of the degree project, but the project should be related to optometry.

The course/work is like a research project that should result in a written report and thus contains:

- choices of topics and problem formulation,
- background description,
- design, selection and method,
- ethical considerations,
- discussion,
- general design and linguistic availability,
- oral presentation, and
- critical reviewing.

Teaching methods

The student/the students should contact a supervisor who accepts this assignment. An examiner of the work is appointed of by the management of the education. Examiner and supervisor will not be the same person.

Examination

The examination comprises four steps:

1) written presentation
2) poster
3) Oral presentation
4) opposition

All stage is assessed according to a three-graded scale: Failed, passed and passed with distinction. A Pass grade requires a Pass for all the steps. To pass with distinction, a pass with distinction is required for all steps

When a student fails an examination, there will be an opportunity for a new examination. All in all, 6 opportunities for a new examination are provided for all parts

Transitional provisions

If the course is closed down or undergoes major changes, students who have not completed the course are given the possibility, during four semesters from the date when the student first registered in the course, to be examined under the then current syllabus After four semesters, the student is examined under the new syllabus.

Other directives

Course evaluation will be carried out in accordance with the guidelines established by the Board of Education.
