Specific entry requirements
A Bachelors degree or a professional degree worth at least 180 credits in biomedicine, biotechnology, cellular and molecular biology, medicine or equivalent exam. English language skills equivalent to English B at Swedish upper secondary school.
Objectives
On completion of the course, the student should:
Regarding knowledge and understanding
- have knowledge of central principles and contexts regarding scientific communication, philosophy of science and bioethics
- have knowledge of rhetorical tools to be able to choose the most efficient arguments, the structures and the words to reach out to different audiences within and outside the research community
- have knowledge of the structure and language style of the scientific article, especially the English used
- have knowledge how a well-structured and designed poster is produced
Regarding skills and abilities
- be able to give structured oral presentation and be able to master audio-visual aids
- be able to summarise in writing, in the form of abstract, scientific articles within the biomedical field
- be able to structure and complete scientific posters
- be able to analyse and present in writing scientific theoretical issues or contexts or ethical problems related to the biomedical field
Regarding judgement and approach
- be able to review and assess scientific presentations critically
- show a professional, scientific and ethical attitude to presentations of experimental data and other acquired information
Content
The course is centred around basic applied communication within the biomedical field. During the course, philosophy of science and bioethics are also treated. Further, introduction to bioentrepreneurship is included.
Teaching methods
The teaching includes lectures, group tuition and project work on group- and individual level.
Examination
The course is examined through written presentation of project work in biomedical ethics/philosophy of science, written task in scientific writing, exercises in oral presentation and oral presentation of group produced poster.
Compulsory participation:
Group work on case examples in philosophy of science and biomedical ethics, scientific writing exercises, oral presentations and group work on bioentrepreneurship is compulsory. The course director assesses if, and in that case how, absence can be compensated. Before the student has participated in all compulsory parts or compensated absence in accordance with the course director's instructions, the student's results for the course will not be registered in LADOK.
Limited number of examinations or practical training sessions
Students who have not passed the regular examination are entitled to participate in five more examinations. If the student is not approved after four examinations, he/she is recommended to retake the course at the next regular course date, and may, after that, participate in two more examinations. If the student has failed six examinations/tests, no additional examination or new admission is provided.
The number of times that the student has participated in one and the same examination is regarded as an examination session. Submission of a blank examination is regarded as an examination. An examination for which the student registered but not participated in, will not be counted as an examination.
Transitional provisions
After each course occasion there will be at least six occasions for the examination within a 2-year period from the end of the course.
Other directives
The course will be evaluated in accordance with the guidelines established by the Board of Higher Education.
