Specific entry requirements
A Bachelors degree or a professional degree worth at least 180 credits in biomedicine, biotechnology, cellular and molecular biology or medicine. English language skills equivalent to English B at Swedish upper secondary school. Passed the course Applied communication in biomedicine 1 including philosophy of science and bioethics at semester 1.
Objectives
Upon completion of the course the student should be able to:
With regard to knowledge and understanding
- understand and identify advances in experimental biomedical research,
- identify central concepts in relation to scientific communication contexts.
With regard to skills and ability
- review, critically analyse and discuss scientific articles in the field of biomedicine,
- orally and in writing present scientific articles.
With regard to judgment and attitude
- critically review and assess presentations of experimental biomedicine (apply assessment criteria),
- demonstrate a professional attitude, scientifically and ethically, in relation to scientific communication contexts.
Content
The course evolves around central concepts of applied communication in biomedicine. The course is focused on biomedical themes, which can illustrate the connection “physiology-disease-diagnostics-drug development-therapy”. Emphasis is on cellular and molecular mechanisms and advanced experimental methodologies. Seminars give aspects on the interaction between academia and the outside community. The course will also offer an insight into career development.
Teaching methods
Tutoring encompasses lectures, seminars and individual and/or group project work. The project work is focused on advancing knowledge by working in a group and with emphasis on individual contribution including reading scientific articles.
Examination
Passing of the course requires active participation and approved project work, including written and oral presentations of the topics dealt with during the course.
Compulsory participation
Seminars, project work including oral and written presentations are compulsary. The course director assesses if and, in that case, how absence can be compensated. Before the student has participated in all compulsory parts or compensated absence in accordance with the course director's instructions, the student's results for respective part will not be registered in LADOK. Absence from a compulsory activity may result in that the student cannot compensate the absence until the next time the course is given.
Limited number of examinations or practical training sessions
Students who have not passed the regular examination are entitled to participate in five more examinations. If the student is not approved after four examinations, he/she is recommended to retake the course at the next regular course date, and may, after that, participate in two more examinations. If the student has failed six examinations/tests, no additional examination or new admission is provided.
Transitional provisions
After each course occasion there will be at least six occasions for the examination within a two-year period from the end of the course.
Other directives
The course language is English.
A course evaluation will be conducted according to guidelines decided by the Board of Higher Education.
Oral evaluation in the form of course council meetings will be carried out during the course.
