Basic course - supplementary education for dentists with foreign examination, 10.5 credits

Foreign dentists with a Degree of Master of Science in Dental Surgery from outside EU/EEA and Switzerland – a decision awarded of The Swedish National Board of Health and Welfare about investigation of dental knowledge and skills through examinations, or – a completed four-year education and 1 year of documented clinical activities at least, and – Swedish and English language skills equivalent to Swedish B and English A at Swedish upper secondary school are also required.

Students who have failed the clinical proficiency training as a consequence of demonstrating deficiencies in knowledge, skills or attitudes so serious that patient safety or patient confidence in healthcare is at risk are qualified for resuming the clinical proficiency training only when the individual action plan has been completed.

Module 1
Människa och samhälle (Man and society), 1.5 credits
On completion of this module, the student should be able to discuss and analyse:
- the basis for scientific thinking within nursing professions,
- psychological and ethical aspects of dental and medical treatment,
- communication patterns between different medical staff and between medical staff and patient in a multicultural society,
- the professional role of dental technicians, dental nurses and dental hygienists and their place in patient care,
- confidentiality and professional secrecy within patient care.

Module 2
Journalföring och introduktion till vuxenkliniken (Case Record and Introduction to the Comprehensive Clinic), 1 credit
On completion of this module, the student should be able to:
- account for and use the Swedish dental care legislation, the patient computer law and the decree on medical records keeping
- use the dental records system OPUS including referrals, the charts of the clinic and administration of their own patients
- take health declaration, general and local medical history, examine and register tooth status and oral status,
- account for and use the hygiene procedures and other work routines of the clinic .

Module 3
Lokalanestesi, HLR, mjuk- och hårdvävnadsdiagnostik (Local Anaesthesia, CPR, Soft and hard tissue diagnostics), 1 credit
On completion of this part, the student should be able to:
- decide when local anesthesia should be used
- choose local anesthetics, apply local anesthesia and keep the patient painless before and during dental and oral treatment,
- inform the patient about modes of action, adverse drug reactions and interactions with other drug
- carry out cardiopulmonary resuscitation
- diagnose the most common pathological alterations in the oral mucous membrane and bone structure and choose type of sampling.

Module 4
Preparationslära – tandfyllningar (Principles of Preparation – dental fillings), 1 credit
On completion of this module, the student should be able to:
- account for and design preparations and fillings adapted to the current tooth, the pulp, the anatomy of surrounding and antagonising teeth and the current teeth orientation in the tooth arc,
- account for and analyse how suggested treatment can be adapted to prevailing stress relations and strength characteristics of both remaining tooth substance and current filling material,
- account for and analyse how therapy and preparation should be adapted to the current patient's caries diagnosis.

Module 5
Preklinisk endodonti (Preclinical endodontology), 1 credit
On completion of this module, the student should be able to:
- account for the basic principles of and be able to carry out access preparation, endodontic treatment and root canal filling on artificial or extracted teeth
- the use of administrative measures, instruments, materials and the routines for hygiene in endodontic treatment,
- verify endodontic treatment with X-ray images
- account for the technology to take bacterial samples from the root canal
- carry out post preparation in root filled artificial and/or extracted teeth.

Module 6
Preklinisk protetik (Preclinical prosthodontics), 5 credits
On completion of this module, the student should be able to:
- explain basic nomenclature and contents of the subject Oral prosthodontics,
- carry out basic preparation types and be familiar with their indications
- take impressions of preparations and make plaster casts
- produce temporary crowns and bridges
- assess and when necessary adjust the fit of a casted crown and/or bridge.

The course has six modules.

Module 1
The working methods of the module are lectures, seminars, clinic-based exercises, dental record exercises, active cooperation over patients with senior students and mentor dialogues.

Module 2
The working methods are lectures, demonstrations, teacher-supervised and independent exercises, fellow student excercises, standard cases and clinical patient administration.

All patient treatment is presented and signed successively on charts for each patient. All the clinical patient administrative exercises are compulsory.

The legislation concerning the patient records and other regulatory frameworks are studied individually and are discussed in seminar.

The dental record system OPUS is trained through teacher-supervised and independent practical computer exercises.
Health declaration and medical history are trained through fellow student exercises and standard cases. Lectures and demonstrations are given on patient administration and communication and how to communicate with the reception.

The hygiene procedures of the clinic are demonstrated and practiced before the students treat their patients.

Module 3:
Lectures, seminars, demonstrations and practical exercises are compulsory. Administration of local anesthesia is trained before the patient treatment. Cardiopulmonary resuscitation is trained after theoretical overview and demonstration. Patient demonstration. The practical exercises take place on a dummy. Exercises and demonstrations are compulsory.

Module 4:
The working methods of the module consist of lectures, demonstrations and practical work in simulated dental clinic environment. The practical training is to carry out cavities for plastic filling materials and to perform plastic fillings.

Module 5
The working methods are lectures, demonstrations and exercises on phantom model, and these are compulsory. IT-based study materials are to obtain.

Endodontic technology is exercised in the pre-clinical environment on artificial or extracted teeth, supervised by teachers. Endodontic treatment is demonstrated at patient demonstrations or instructional films.

Module 6:
Before the module starts the student should go through a theoretical and practical diagnostic test to establish their level of knowledge. The teaching is adapted to the results the student shows.

The working methods of the module are compulsory own, practical, teacher-supervised work on phantom patient. Proficiency training on preclinical laboratory is compulsory,as well as lectures, demonstrations, practical work and group assignments.

Theoretical knowledge of preparation for crown and bridge-prosthetic constructions are taught in lectures and seminars. Practical and manual performing are taught at demonstrations and are trained at both teacher-supervised and independent practical preparation on phantom model.

Module 1
Examination is arranged through a take-home exam.

Module 2
Presentation of prescribed assignments is examined. Attendance is required at compulsory parts of the course. Missed occasions should be compensated for by a make-up assignment given by the course manager.

Module 3:
Examination takes place of implemented adequate chosen and applied local anaesthesia and passed cardiopulmonary resuscitation exercise.

Module 4:
Examination of carrying-out and self-assessment of practical test that is carried out on coded working models in patient simulator.

Module 5:
Examination of practical test and written examination.

Module 6
The examination consists of:
- Self-assessment of (not previously teacher-assessed) work.
- Teacher assessment of the self-assessment and the work itself.
- Examinations of preparation techniques.
- Written examination
- All parts on the charts should be passed. Examination: written examination semester 1)

Limited number of examinations or practical training sessions:
If the student's examination become not passed, the student obtains further 4 trials. Is the student not passed after 5 trials no more admission in the course are given. (HF 6 chapter section 21).

Interrupt the clinical the proficiency training:
The examiner may with immediate effect interrupt a student's clinical proficiency training if the student demonstrates such serious deficiencies in knowledge, skills or attitudes that patient safety or patient confidence in healthcare is at risk. When the clinical proficiency training is interrupted like this, it implies that the student fails in the clinical part of the course.
In such cases, an individual action plan should be set up, where it comes clear which activities and examinations are required before the student is given the possibility to clinical proficiency training in this course.

If the course is closed-down or undergoes major changes, examination under a previous reading list and learning outcomes are offered, no more than one academic year (no more than 2 examinations in addition to regular examinations) after the implementation of the revision/close-down.

The course has been cancelled and was offered for the last time in the autumn semester of 2015. Examination will be provided until the autumn of 2017 for students who have not completed the course.

Course evaluation is carried out according to the guidelines established by the Board of education.
