Specific entry requirements

Dental Degree of at least 180 credits. In addition, knowledge of English equivalent to English B is required.

Objectives

On completion of the course, the participant should be able to: - demonstrate an integrated knowledge of children's mental development in relation to treatment motivation and co-operation - identify and distinguish children with psychosocial disability - have a good knowledge of how occlusal development can benefit from early interceptive treatment - have a good knowledge of and be able to independently carry out measures to control occlusal development - have a good knowledge of different appliance types and be able to independently use them in treatment - independently master repair of broken appliances - demonstrate a good ability to inform, motivate and instruct the patient receiving interceptive treatment - supervise and teach general dentists in the execution of interceptive treatment

Content

Child and adolescent psychology/psychiatry. Theory of interceptive orthodontics. Clinical applications of: removable expansion plates, growth adaptive functional devices, and simple fixed appliance systems and their fabrication. Clinical practice in patient care where interceptive care should be performed.

Teaching methods

Lectures in basic child and adolescent psychology/psychiatry, literature seminars, laboratory demonstrations on the manufacture of removable devices. Preparation and delivery of lectures for dental students. Clinical work with own patients.

Examination

Written examination. Evaluation of lecture. Oral presentation of selected scientific article related to interceptive orthodontics. Present independently treated patient. Practical test of wire bending and repair of broken appliances.
