Specific entry requirements

Dental Degree of at least 180 credits. Required is also 60 credits of clinical courses in orthodontics, the course Theory and methodology of science - specialist training in odontology 1, 15 credits as well as the course Theory and methodology of science - specialist training in odontology 2, 15 credits. In addition, knowledge of English equivalent to English B (with a grade of Pass) is required.

Objectives

On completion of the course, the student should be able to: - show advanced knowledge in scientific methods, problem-solving and apply the acquired knowledge in the field of orthodontics - independently identify and formulate research questions, as well as plan, design, write and present a research plan within a limited area - apply ethical aspects in their own research study - systematically collect and analyse relevant material and explain their choice of methods related to the research question - independently plan, conduct, compile data, evaluate and write a scientific paper that contributes to increased knowledge within their field of study. - demonstrate an ability to communicate verbally and in writing with different groups at both a national and international level about their conclusions and the knowledge and arguments that provide the foundation - analyse, critically review and communicate research done by others - apply the process of publishing scientific papers

Content

Based on the research plan that was approved in the course Theory and methodology of science - specialist training in odontology 2, a study is planned and conducted in the form of an experiment or thorough the collection of material and data, under the consultative guidance from a supervisor with a research degree. The results of the study are compiled, and the work is presented continuously in the form of progress reports in seminars or as a written memorandum. A scientific degree project is written containing the following: summary, introduction, materials and methods, results and discussion in English. The quality and the scope of the degree project should correspond to an article intended for publishing in a scientific journal within the field of dentistry. The degree project must be written in English and is presented in public to other students, supervisors and examiners.

Teaching methods

The student plans and conducts their own research under supervision and presents this by writing a scientific article. Seminars as well as advising from supervisor is compulsory In case of absence, complementary assignment is completed after agreement with the course coordinator.

Examination

The degree project is presented in a seminar once the other compulsory modules are completed. The project is reviewed by examiners and by another student in the course. The student must also review and publicly discuss another student's degree project. A student who does not submit the degree project at the normal time or does not complete the examination, must wait until the next examination opportunity. Examinations are carried out once a semester.

Transitional provisions

Examination will be provided during a period of two years after a possible closing of the course. Examination can be carried out according to an earlier literature list during a period of one year after the date of a renewal of the literature list.
