Specific entry requirements

Participation in the course requires completion of the course Clinical medicine - neuro, senses psyche, and a Pass grade in course in Clinical medicine.

Objectives

Course in strategies for diagnostics and treatment of addiction diseases, with the general aim that the student should have acquired an advanced understanding of the clinical subject area addiction medicine, in order to be able to identify and handle patients with abuse and addiction diseases. The knowledge is tiered according to the SOLO taxonomy and the skills according to Miller's pyramid. Skills: That the student should Be able to take medical history independently, carry out a clinical study (M4) Be able to compile and interpret the results of the clinical study, suggest diagnosis according to DSM-IV. (S3) Be able to assess the nursing level and suggest adequate measures. (S3) Be able to show a professional treatment and establish good contact with the patients. (M4) Be able to evaluate scientific articles. (S3) Knowledge and understanding Have knowledge about and understand symptoms and underlying mechanisms of abuse and dependence, identify patients with addiction symptoms for investigation, treatment and hearing at an adequate level in the care organisation (S3) Know and be familiar with specific diagnostic instruments/methods for early diagnosis of abuse and/or dependence. (S3) Be familiar with the occurrence of specialist units in addiction care (S2) Be familiar with rehabilitation options for addicted patients (S3) Attitude Be able to apply a scientific attitude (M3) Be aware that own values and attitudes affect the own behaviour in the interplay with the patient (S3) Be able to observe specific aspects such as ethical problems, gender aspects and ethnicity and demonstrate an understanding of how these affect the physician-patient relation (S3)

Content

Acute treatment, in-patient care, out-patient care and specialist units are included in the course. Both pre-clinical and clinical subjects within e g pharmacology, neurology, psychiatry and general medicine are included in the course. Ongoing pre-clinical and clinical research activity is presented.

Teaching methods

The course focuses on directed medical history taking, diagnostics and proposals for continued treatment plan. The course includes proficiency training in the form of advanced clinical knowledge in handling of patients with addiction in acute situations, in-patient care, out-patient care and special programmes. The core of the course is the clinical service, and each student will have approximately three days of clinical placing and two days of other activities a week. During the course, the student should also make an advanced assignment alone or in a groups of two. A topic is chosen from a recommended list. The student should search for knowledge and literature in the subject, write an essay, sum up in Power Point and present the work orally the last day of the seminar This includes literature search and examination of scientific articles based on an EBM perspective.

Examination

Compulsory parts A Pass in the course requires 80% active participating in seminars and the practical parts. Examination takes place in the form of - Practical examination. The student processes a patient and is assessed by supervising physicians regarding treatment, autoanamnesis, somatic us, psychiatric status and makes suggestions for diagnosis and treatment. Further, how the student informs the patient, and what the student proposes for the medical record, is assessed . The examination takes place during the last course week. - An advanced study with an approved essay and an oral presentation. Presentation of an advanced assignment takes place firstly by e-mailing the completed the essay to the course coordinator no later than about four days before the final seminar day. Oral presentation of the work is done with Power Point illustrations the last seminar day in the presence of other students, the course administration and the examiner. - Accomplished and passed clinical training

Transitional provisions

If a course has been closed down or undergone major changes, at least two additional examinations (excluding regular examinations) in the previous contents are provided during a period of a year from the date of the change.

The course connects to and advances knowledge within Stage C such as core within the Study Programme in Medicine.
