Objectives
The general aims of the course are to achieve advanced knowledge and skills in treatment and care of the seriously ill child and his/her family. Knowledge and skills are described in accordance with the SOLO and Miller taxonomies. Knowledge and understanding After the course, the student should: 1. Be able to understand and explain important aspects of serious acute as well as chronic diseases in children and youths: (S3) 2. Be able to understand how the metabolism, vulnerability panorama and psychosocial conditions of children differ from those in adults and how this affects the care of the seriously ill child. (S2) 3. Be able to understand and determine the adequate nursing level for relevant conditions and determine his own obligations in relation to the choice of nursing level. (S4) Skills 1. Be able to carry out and correctly assess somatic status of children of different ages. (M4) 2. Be able to take an adequate and relevant medical record for conditions in children of different ages (M4) 3. Be able to identify identify and initially handle certain serious diseases in children and youths. (M3) 4. Be familiar with nursing programmes and current research findings and be able to apply these to clinical issues. (M3) 5. Be able to search and evaluate scientific information from databases and apply evidence-based medicine. (M4) Attitude Knowledge and attitude: Be able to show an understanding of the fundamental values and basic ethical principles of the healthcare. (M3) Behaviour: Be able to demonstrate a critical and scientific attitude and be able to, adequately, evaluate scientific information. (M3) To be able to apply an integrated humanistic and scientific view in the care of seriously ill children and youths. (M3)
Content
Apart from the child health care centre, the metabolic lab, the dialysis unit, the pathology clinic, the transplantation clinic, the adult nephrology clinic, the simulator centre at HS, the paediatric surgery unit and the intensive care clinic and applicable units in basic science will be integrated in the teaching The course focuses on the acutely ill child with a chronically serious illness. A serious disease in a child often has another genesis than in adults, and investigation and treatment are done considering the age of the child. Ethical aspects of serious illness in children continuously permeate the teaching . The contents of the course parts are as follows: The course part The acutely ill child with a serious illness, will bring up: Sepsis and meningitis - treatment, prognosis Multitrauma - urgent care, treatment Liver failure - treatment, causes, prognosis Kidney failure - treatment, causes, prognosis Respiratory failure - treatment, causes, prognosis The course part The child with a chronic, serious illness will clarify: Transplantation - treatment in connection with transplantation of liver, kidney and bone marrow Metabolic and cardiovascular late effects of difficult disease in childhood including intra-uterin growth restriction, listed prematurity, cytotoxin treatment Cognitive late effects of serious illness and cytotoxin treatment in different ages The neurologically sick child The course part The child with a serious intra-uterine illness will be brought up: Intrauterin infections The growth inhibited foetus The course part Psychosocial effects of difficult disease will bring up: The crisis reaction of children of different ages suffering from difficult diseases Families in acute crisis Family dynamic effects of chronic disease in the family Professional development (PD) will be an important continuation of the training in the physician's role, as it is profiled during the basic course Scientific development (VetU) is a natural part of the course implying the application of evidence-based medicine and an advanced study in critical scientific approach.
Teaching methods
Clinical placement in units for care of seriously ill children at HS is the basis of the course. Here, sections for both highly specialised regional care (nephrology, gastroenterology, hepatology, nutrition and hematology, CF, metabolic diseases, neonatology etc) and a general paediatric ward and an emergency ward will be considered. In addition, placement in paediatric surgery and exercises in Simulatorcentrum in Huddinge are offered. Placement will be distributed according to the students' wishes and interest profiles. Integrated patient and case seminars, lectures within relevant sections, supervised rounds with active student participation and project work are included in the course. Team exercises in order to exercise treatment of ill that requires multi-disciplinary treatment is carried out in simulator centres and at regular exercises in the emergency department HS. Teaching with an emphasis on medical knowledge and understanding is based on learning outcomes according to the SOLO taxonomy. The tuition forms are adapted to learning outcomes with structuring lectures in large groups, seminars, group discussions and presentations of projects in groups of 6-8 students. Clinical training of proficiency is carried out in the clinical patient-close environment where students exercise bedside according to the model that is well-established at Children's hospital. Individual structured feedback is a natural part of this work. Examination
Compulsory parts: Clinical placements, seminars, simulation exercises. For a Pass grade in the course, approved attendance and active participation in compulsory parts are required and an approved and presented project work.
