More information about the study programme
Speech and Language Pathology students study healthy and disordered speech, language, voice, and swallowing functions, the disorders´ causes and treatment and the patients´ rehabilitation. Speech-language pathology is an interdisciplinary field and the study programme includes humanities, science and medicine. It consists of theory and clinical practicum in parallel. The aim of the study programme is to teach and train the students in examination, assessment, diagnostics, and treatment of speech, language, voice and swallowing disorders in patients of all ages.
Courses in the different subject areas that are included in the programme are introduced in the first semester. Speech and Language Pathology is then studied integrated with other subject areas chronologically focusing first on infants and pre-school children, school-aged children, adults and the elderly. Conditions in speech and language pathology prevalent through the life span are studied in the semester 6, such as voice- and speech fluency disorders and dysphagia. During semester 7-8 studies are at advanced level with a focus on more in-depth studies in speech and language pathology (semester 7) and exam project, 30 ECTS (semester 8). Work-integrated learning is introduced already during semester 1-3 as clinical observations and continue semester 4-7 as work-integrated learning in various settings.
Terms four to seven contain courses in speech and language pathology. These courses consist of theory and practicum. Practicum takes part at the Karolinska University Hospital, at other hospitals, speech-language clinics and habilitation centers in the Stockholm area.
The programme is ended with a Master's thesis (one semester).
