After you have applied for a freestanding course
What happens after you have applied for a freestanding course? The admissions process is divided between University Admissions in Sweden and Karolinska Institutet. We have different responsibilities.
Assessment of your fee status
Initially your application is processed by University Admissions in Sweden. University Admissions checks whether you are required to pay the application fee or whether you are exempted from the fees. Please note that your application will not be processed by University Admissions before they have received the application fee or proof of exemption
Assessment of the general documentation requirements and English language proficiency
Once your fee status has been processed, University Admissions starts to assess whether you meet the general documentation requirements, and the English language requirement. The English language requirement is defined as proficiency in English equivalent to the Swedish upper secondary school English 6.
Assessment of your specific eligibility
Once your application has been processed and approved by University Admissions in Sweden, Karolinska Institutet starts to assess whether you meet the specific entry requirements for the freestanding course that you have applied for.
Follow your application status
In case you have not documented your fee status or eligibility according to the instructions, you will be notified at your account at universityadmissions.se. Please note that there is no guarantee that your application will have been processed by the deadline for the supporting documentation/application fee deadline. Please check the deadlines for the spring intake or autumn intake.
Selection
The selection is made among applicants who meet both the documentation and eligibility requirements for the freestanding course. You can read more about the selection in the course description.
You must accept or decline your admissions offer
For the autumn 2024 intake, the first admissions results are published on the 11th of July 2024, and you will receive a notification to your email address when the notification of selection results are available at your account at universityadmissions.se. Please note that you must accept your admissions offer by the last day to reply to your offer. You will lose your admissions offer if you fail to accept your admissions offer. If you are wait-listed after the first selection results have been published, you may still have a chance to be admitted in the second selection round.
For the spring 2025 intake, the first admissions results are published on the 10th of December 2024, and you will receive a notification to your email address when the notification of selection results are available at your account at universityadmissions.se. Please note that you must accept your admissions offer by the last day to reply to your offer. You will lose your admissions offer if you fail to accept your admissions offer. If you are wait-listed after the first selection results have been published, you may still have a chance to be admitted in the second selection round.
If you are not able to start your studies, we wish that you decline your admissions offer as early as possible. Please log in to your account at universityadmissions.se or antagning.se and decline your admissions offer.
You can download the notification of selection results (which is the official admissions decision) from your account at universityadmissions.se or antagning.se.
Fee-paying students are conditionally admitted
If you are a fee-paying student, you are conditionally admitted on condition that you pay the tuition fee by the deadline. You will receive instructions on how to pay the tuition fees/show proof of exemption via e-mail. The e-mail is sent to the adress which you have registered at your account at universityadmissions.se.
If you are placed on the waiting list (reserve list)
If you are still wait-listed after the second selection round, you may have a chance to get admitted from the waiting list. Admissions from the waiting list will only start if there is a need to fill the seats for the freestanding course. Karolinska Institutet usually admits more students than the number of seats for the course, and when an admitted student decline their admissions offer, this does not automatically lead to an offer for a waitlisted applicant.
The admissions process may continue until the start of the course, sometimes even after the start of the course.
If you become admitted from the wait-list, the administration will contact you, usually through e-mail, and you will have at least 24 hours to reply to your offer.
If you are waitlisted at KI and receive an offer at another university, and no longer wish to remain on the waiting list, you should withdraw your application from your account at universityadmissions.se.
Enrolment
It is important that you follow the information for newly admitted students. You will lose your admissions offer if you fail to register by the deadline. Please visit the course website for your freestanding course for more information.
Deferral of the study start
If you need to postpone the start of your studies, you can apply for a deferral of the study start. Please note that you must have a valid reason.
Reasons for deferrals
A deferral can only be granted if you are currently admitted, have accepted your admission and paid the first installment of the tuition fee if applicable. You must also demonstrate a valid reason for your deferral request. Valid reasons for granting a deferral may be social circumstances, medical circumstances or other special circumstances such as caring of child, being called up for military service or civilian service, student union commissions, military training according to the ordinance (2015:613), or deferred statutory leave in accordance with the Swedish Education Leave Act (1974:981) [HF chapter 7, § 33 (1993:100) and UHRFS (2016:1)].
Unfortunately reasons such as financial shortage concerning payment of tuition fee or living expenses, difficulties to find an apartment, preferring to pursue another study or work opportunity, etc. will not be sufficient for granting a deferral.
How to apply for a deferral
You apply for a deferral by filling out the web form.
Please note that the freestanding course which you have been admitted to may not be offered the next academic year.
Appeals
If you have been denied admission because you do not meet the general and/or specific requirements, and you believe that the assessment is incorrect, you can appeal the selection result. Appeals on any other grounds are not possible. You can submit the appeal after you have received the notification of selection results. Read more about appeals on universityadmissions.se.
