Interprofessional Learning (IPL) day

Karolinska Institutet organizes a mandatory IPL day for all first-year students in undergraduate programs to introduce interprofessional learning and collaboration at an early stage.

Interprofessional learning (IPL) occurs when two or more professions learn from, with, and about each other to improve collaboration and the quality of healthcare.

Purpose of the day

The purpose of the IPL day is to provide an early introduction to interprofessional learning and collaboration, with a focus on interprofessional competence and person-centred care, giving students important perspectives to carry with them throughout their education.

This is in line with the common program-wide interprofessional learning outcomes, which state that after completing their education students should be able to:

  • identify and describe the competencies of the professions that collaborate within their future field of practice
  • communicate and collaborate with other professions within their future field of practice
  • analyse and reflect on how collaboration between different professions contributes to evidence-based care and rehabilitation, improved health, and high-quality research.

Date for IPL day

The IPL day for the autumn semester will be held on 20 October 2026.

What happens on IPL day?

The morning consists of self-paced activities in the learning platform Canvas. This Canvas activity will be available about a week before the IPL day, allowing students to complete the activities at their own pace, although the entire morning is set aside for this activity.

In the afternoon, students meet at Campus Flemingsberg, where they are divided into interprofessional groups led by two supervisors from different professions.

The Canvas material is based on interviews with patients, relatives, and clinical teams who contribute their different perspectives. This material provides students with a shared knowledge foundation and prepares them for the interactive campus activities in the afternoon.

The afternoon program builds on the Canvas material and provides an opportunity to discuss with students from other programs, thereby deepening learning about interprofessional collaboration through shared reflection and assignments.

Such as, what does well-functioning collaboration in healthcare look like, what competencies are needed, and how do you involve the patient and their relatives in the team? These are some of the questions we discuss during the day.

Attendance on IPL day

Please note that both the Canvas activity and the afternoon on-campus programme are mandatory, and participation in both parts is required in order to pass the day. In order to access information about where students should be in the afternoon, they must first complete the entire Canvas activity. Attendance will also be registered at the beginning of the afternoon activities, which take place on site at the Flemingsberg campus.
