Nursing (Specialist) 2024-2025

To be accepted as an exchange student at Karolinska Institutet you must be enrolled at a higher education institution that has a written exchange agreement with Karolinska Institutet for the specific study programme of interest. Exchange students should be selected and nominated by their home institution, however the final decision on admission is made by Karolinska Institutet.

Advanced level (second cycle) 

Options in English

For exchange students without very good command of the Swedish language, the Specialist Nursing Programme offers options in English as presented below.

Courses and Grades

All courses and rotations are full-time and require at least 40 hours of work per week. A student can only attend one course or rotation at a time. One study week is equivalent to 1.5 ECTS credits (i.e. 3 ECTS = 2 weeks, 4.5 ECTS = 3 weeks, etc). The performance will be graded in accordance with the ECTS grading scale (A-F, 7-grade) based on assessment of the student´s fulfilment of the learning objectives stated in the course syllabus. 

General requirements

Specific requirements: 

  • Registered Nurse with a bachelor’s degree in nursing (≥180 ECTS)
  • Current student status in a specialist nursing programme
  • ≥30 ECTS (6 months) of advanced level education in a specialist nursing programme

Autumn semester 2024 and spring semester 2025

Curricular Courses

  • 2EE078 Literature Review - Advanced Level, 3 ECTS, 2 weeks (flexible start and end dates)
  • 2XX335 Global Health in an Interprofessional setting: A Caring Science Perspective, 7.5 ECTS, 5 weeks, online, part time (50%) 20 Sep - 8 Dec. Spring semester schedule tbd.

Clinical Rotations

  • 2EE095 Advanced nursing-clinical education, 7,5 ECTS credits (5 weeks)

This five week clinical rotation is only open to students in specialist training. The course is offered autumn semester 2024 and spring semester 2025. Courses and clinical rotations are offered throughout the academic year (September - June) at the different teaching hospitals and health care providers affiliated to Karolinska Institutet. No courses or rotations are offered during July and August.

The starting date of the clinical rotation are quite flexible and may be adjusted to fit the study plan of the individual student. All clinical rotations require at least 40 hours of work per week, normally 32 hours of clinical work and 8 hours of independent studies. 

Please note that there is only a limited number of places for clinical rotations and a study place can therefore not be guaranteed.

During the clinical rotation the student will be assigned to a clinical supervisor who will be responsible for ongoing instruction and supervision. Appointed lecturer will be responsible for the clinical area in question and participates together with the clinical supervisor in the initial discussion of the student's educational objectives and in evaluations.

Options in Swedish

Exchange students with a good command of Swedish or another Scandinavian language are welcome to apply for the options for exchange students presented below.
