Basic course in oncology, autumn 2023

This 2-day course entails introduction to tumor biology together with an overview of risk factors, diagnosis, and treatment of common cancer types.

Purpose and goal

The objective of this course is to offer participants an introduction to tumor biology, encompassing both tumor cells and the surrounding supporting cells. Through this course, attendees will gain insight into the diagnosis and treatment approaches for prevalent cancer types in adults and children.

By the end of this course, participants will have a solid foundation in tumor biology, a comprehensive understanding of the diagnostic techniques employed in adult and pediatric cancers, and familiarity with the current treatment approaches used in clinical practice. This course serves as a steppingstone for further exploration in the field of cancer research, patient care, and multidisciplinary collaborations.

Target group

Employees at pharmaceutical companies in the oncology area who wish to gain an overall knowledge of different cancer types, their diagnosis, and treatments.

Course content and outline

The course is based on lectures in an interactive atmosphere with ample opportunities for questions and discussion. All lectures will be shared with the participants. The course is given in English.

The course starts with a general introduction to the properties of cancer cells and tumor biology. Specific lectures will thereafter follow on the most common adult and pediatric cancers.

Lectures will discuss:

  • tumor as an organ
  • immune surveillance
  • risk factors, incidence, and prognosis for different tumor types
  • drug-based treatment of early and late stages of disease
  • prevention and health

The most interesting ongoing international trials and ongoing clinical and translational cancer research at Karolinska Institutet will be presented.

13 500 SEK excl. VAT. Lunch as well as refreshments are included both days.
