Course layout

Psychiatric disorders among children and adolescents constitute a substantial health problem that can lead to serious and long-term impairment. Being able to identify, address, and manage important psychiatric conditions in children and adolescents enhances your ability as physician to positively impact their growth and development.

During semester 9, differences between child and adolescent psychiatry and adult psychiatry were introduced. Now, the Child and adolescent psychiatry course takes teaching further and includes five full days of study. It starts with four consecutive days a bit into the moment Pediatric and adolescent medicine. These days include two half-day case seminars in smaller groups and digital skills training as well as more general and in-depth lectures. The fifth course day, a few weeks later, includes a seminar on conversation methodology in family systems with children with mental illness and a written test in examination hall after lunch.

The teaching off-line is carried out jointly for all students (regardless of hospital placement) at Karolinska University Hospital Solna and KI Campus Solna. This is interspersed with digital skills training in suicide prevention, assessing and communicating mental status for the target group and basic legal framework and mandatory reporting of concern. The latter can be done on your own remotely, or in a course room where a teacher is available for questions most course afternoons.
