Hear from Nutrition Science alumni Callum

Hear from alumni Callum about choosing Karolinska Institutet, what he liked the best about studying the Master's Programme in Nutrition Science, and what he is doing today.

Three reasons I chose to study nutrition science at KI:

  1. I am passionate about keeping a healthy diet and lifestyle myself, and I love food.
  2. I want to help people improve their diet as it can influence mental health and overall well-being. I also wanted to understand the global health issues associated with nutrition.
  3. This degree also provided education about the science behind nutrition and how recommendations and guidelines for nutrients/ food are made.

My favourite course of the programme:

The association between diet and health. This course was really fun and I learned about the important global and public health issues associated with nutrition and diet, which for me put learning about nutrition into perspective.

The best thing about studying at Karolinska Institutet:

To learn with people from all over the world. At KI teamwork is an integral part of learning, which I love.

One thing I learnt that I didn’t know before starting the programme:

How to create an m-health application to help promote physical activity, and how to design and carry out an intervention study.

What I do today:

I work as a project assistant at The School of Sport and Health Sciences (GIH) in Stockholm. This is a fantastic place to work and the research conducted here is extremely important and interesting.

Where I see myself in three years:

I can see myself completing a PhD within the field of diet, physical activity and health which I would extremely enjoy. Or maybe I come up with a great business idea to promote physical activity and diet J

I wish someone had told me this before I started the nutrition programme:

In all honesty I have no wishes on what someone could have told me about the programme. The programme was what I expected and had anticipated for.

My advice to future nutrition science students at KI:

Get a head start and do some research in the relevant fields before starting the programme. This will inspire you, make you ask more insightful questions and get you in the groove. Also put the effort into the work and try to learn as much as you can. It’s a great programme and a lucky place to be in life, the time goes by quickly.
